I wanted to discover what we could be and how we might come together.

Griffin gave me a single nod, and I knew at once that we were on the same page and wavelength. We knew there was only one way ahead.

Like he had sent a message to me through our bond, I could feel that he was fighting for me at that moment. He wanted to prove himself to me and to show his dominance. It was a very important thing for shifters, and I had to respect it.

I didn’t think anyone would ever fight for me, both in a literal and figurative sense, but being in that moment, I did not doubt Griffin’s intentions. He was there to win.

“Let the spar begin!” Kai announced, stepping out of the ring.

My heart clenched as the boys started to move and let their instincts take over. As they paced, light on their feet, they didn’t pull their eyes away from one another. While Griffin seemed calm, I could feel the pulse of his anger and power from my place. That wrath certainly came from somewhere, and it made me wonder if something happened that I didn’t know about.

Or if his irritation from finding me with Noah at the park was enough to make his wolf furious.

Regardless, Griffin didn’t look like someone any logical person would want to cross.

In the blink of an eye, they both jerked and jolted as their shift kicked in. In the blink of an eye, what had been two regular-looking men contorted until fur ripped up their backs, and their paws hit the ground. That hair fell perfectly into place all over their bodies, along with their fangs and claws.

Two huge wolves paced in the ring as they circled each other, baring their teeth and taunting the other.

The crowd erupted in cheers at the sight of their wolf forms.

Noah was a grey shade with dark eyes, and even as a wolf, he was smaller than Griffin.

The latter, who seemed more dominant in both size and intimidation, was a deep chocolate-brown, and those ember eyes were so piercing, that I couldn’t stop myself from staring in awe.

Time seemed to stand still as they sized each other up, hardly hanging on to whatever self-restraint they had left.

Then, with a mutual growl, their paws dug into the dirt and they both lunged.

In an instant, they were on each other. In a mess of fur and clashing teeth, they fought.

Clutching onto Cora for support, I was desperate for that comfort. For the silent reassurance that everything would be alright.

“These things are usually safe, right?” I asked her over the sounds of them growling and snapping at each other.

“Normally,” she returned gently, just as tense as I felt.

“Nobody usually dies, right?”

She hesitated. “It’s frowned upon but has happened in the past.”

“I shouldn’t have asked.”

After taking their initial rounds at each other as if analyzing the opposition for weak points, they pulled back and shook their heads. Griffin with his sharp eyes firmly on Noah, snarled as he circled him again, forcing him into a more defensive stance. There was nothing that even resembled yielding in his stare as he evaluated the other smaller wolf.

In the blink of an eye, Noah snapped at what he likely thought was a weak point to pull himself away from the small circle he was trapped within, but Griffin followed it up with a deep bite to his shoulder.

Noah yelped but retaliated, and the fight went from evaluating to full offensive attacks.

They snapped at each other, looking for as many openings as they could find.

It sounded nasty, and I couldn’t bring myself to relax. Regardless of where I stood with both of them, I didn’t want either one to get hurt.

The spar seemed to drag on to my dismay, with both wolves getting their hits in. I was at the edge of my seat, silently pleading for Griffin to come out unscathed. I couldn’t stand the thought of him being wounded beyond his healing abilities.

They both pulled back again, pacing to buy themselves some time to catch their breath. Both were bleeding, and their fur was wet with saliva.

Noah lifted his left leg from time to time while Griffin moved with the slightest visible limp.
