My face must’ve shown just how surprised I was since he seemed amused as he looked down at me.

“Now that I know your name, it’s my turn.”

“What?” I asked bluntly, not sure what he was getting at.

Liam chuckled again, hands warm against my waist. “You asked all your questions, but I have some for you.”

The interest written across his face was clear as he swayed with me, and I couldn’t help but feel more perceived than ever at that moment.

Knowing it was only fair, I nodded slowly. “All right then. Ask away.”

Like he had already been considering it, he asked without much thought, “What did you get up to when I was gone?”

He seemed so nonchalant despite learning my true identity, and it still caught me off-guard. I didn’t think he’d be so willing to talk to me, especially not after our rocky history.

Regardless, I composed myself and thought back to that time. When I finally had the chance to work on myself and to forget about Liam.

“I went off to university and got my bachelor's,” I began, remembering how freeing that time had been for me. “When that was done, I came back here and officially joined the coven. I worked with my coven sisters to get stronger and better understand my powers, and then I got hired as an intern for the local paper. I worked my way up, and now I’m a head reporter.”

Liam looked impressed by my accomplishments, even if I tended to minimize them in my mind. “It sounds like you had everything together from day one.”

“It’s not the most exciting story,” I admitted, somewhat embarrassed beneath his eyes.

But he shrugged. “You’re motivated—that’s a good thing. There’s nothing wrong with having a clear path ahead.”

While that was true, I did everything by the book and worked as hard as I could. Yet, the path ahead had never felt more uncertain before. Other than continuing to work and help around the community, there was no telling what was next for me.

After being a straight arrow through school, it left me feeling like I had missed out on certain things, and after that, I didn’t have much fulfillment in the relationship department. While I had spent my fair share of nights with men I hardly knew, it never went farther than that, and it felt like something was missing.

I didn’t want to depend on a relationship to make me feel complete, but I could only assume it wouldn’t hurt.

“Do you want another drink?” Liam asked, eyes still laced with that keen interest.

I knew messing around with him wasn’t ideal, but I couldn’t resist.

He looked incredible under the Roadbar lights, claiming all of my attention without even trying.

Regardless of our past, which didn’t seem to bother him all that much, I didn’t want to pass up on some potential fun. He seemed to be very different from when we were kids, and that filled me with a new sense of hope.

Forgiving him for what happened was never in the cards for me, but after seeing him in a new light, it made me wonder if it could be possible to reconcile.

Warmed and brave from the drinks in my system, I nodded and followed Liam over to the bar, almost giddy about the night ahead.

Chapter 8 - Liam

When I first left town for the city, I never thought I’d see Cora again.

After being told that the enthralling reporter-lady was her, I felt like an idiot for not realizing it. But in my defense, growing up changed her in many ways.

She was bolder and more confident than she once was, and something about her was pulling me in. There was no denying how gorgeous she became on top of it all, almost like she underwent an entire transformation.

Even when we were young, part of me always had a crush on her, but I never imagined just how much she would flourish as a young woman. It had me wondering what she thought about me after all those years.

From what I could tell, she seemed just as interested as I was.

Cora had danced on me like she couldn’t get enough, and as we drank and talked even more throughout the night, I found myself not caring about anyone else in the room.

For all I knew, she was the only woman there, and I was completely sold.
