It began just as the old pack meetings used to, but of course, with a different alpha leading it. Taking it all in, I couldn’t help but feel like I had been transported to another time.

I had been as involved as I could be as a kid, even if there was no way for me to be assigned a true job at the time. I went to every meeting, participated in every event that was thrown, and made friends with the other young shifters.

Things had been so simple then, and being in that room, surrounded by the pack, brought me a strange comfort. That nostalgia of coming home reminded me that I could never miss another pack meeting again. It was too much of a safety blanket to give up again, even if most people found them boring.

Looking around the room, I noticed a few shifters wearing uniforms labeled ‘Task Force.’ I assumed they were like a police force since the idea had been tossed around when I was a kid, but it hadn’t been integrated at the time.

It seemed like a good way to serve the community, even if I was technically a newcomer.

The longer I thought about it, the more questions I had, along with interest.

Running my own business was a busy venture, but I knew it wouldn’t be impossible for me to put in some volunteer time. It would likely help make my transition back into the pack easier.

Something in me wanted to be involved, and I didn’t mind the idea of wearing one of those uniforms.

The meeting went on, and Kai hit all the points that he needed to say. Before long, he dismissed everyone but stuck behind to answer any questions.

Taking the opportunity, I went up to him.

He grinned at me. “Hey, Liam. I was glad to see you came. How can I help you?”

Aware of his alpha status, my wolf stilled with respect, conceding to that greater source of power and social standing.

“I was wondering if I could see about joining the Task Force.”

He cocked a brow at me. “You’re sure? I’m surprised you’d be willing to jump in so soon.”

I shrugged. “I wouldn’t be able to full-time, but I wouldn’t mind helping out in some way.”

Kai considered my words, then nodded a few times. “That’s understandable. We do always need extra hands. If that’s what you want, I had no issue putting in a good word for you.”

“That would be great, thanks,” I replied, feeling surprisingly fulfilled after the meeting.

“No problem. It’s great to have you back.”

On the coattail of that optimism, I made my way back home, thinking about how incredible everything had been since I returned. While I had hoped everything would go well, I never imagined how seamlessly everything would work out. I felt luckier than ever.

Driving my truck through town, I considered the additional information Kai gave me about the Task Force before I left, mulling over the opportunity.

But my concentration halted the moment I spotted her again.

It was a small town, but I never thought I’d see Cora everywhere.

There she was, walking down the street with a friend, chatting and laughing together.

With her raven-black hair split down the middle and braided into two plaits, and put together in general, there was no denying just how beautiful she was.

Every stride she took with those long legs seemed even more perfect than the last, and she exuded that new confidence I never saw from her as children.

Even if she had been more sensitive to the rejection than I would’ve liked, there was something about her that I just couldn’t ignore. Something that pulled me in.

Memories from our time together at the bar flashed in my head, followed by the more tempting ones from after the fact. I could still feel the lush softness of her skin and the way her body reacted to my touch. The way she moaned for me, always begging for more, was ingrained in my mind.

We went a ridiculous number of rounds that seemed never-ending, like we couldn’t get enough of each other. It was hard to forget, and I couldn’t ignore how amazing the whole thing had been before I tried to let her down gently.

Something in me wanted to approach Cora and speak to her. I didn’t know what I wanted to say or how I would say it, but there was just a raw need to do something.

Yet, I had the feeling it was a bad idea.
