That desire only grew more from his accusations, striking me even harder because at least a part of me knew he wasn’t wrong. But I didn’t want him to know it stemmed from a personal place. I didn’t want to give him that satisfaction.

“You have no right to learn about my past,” Liam said, eyes intense with his determination and anger. “I shared what I wanted to, but that is where I draw the line.”

I tried to focus on my breathing to calm myself down, but it was fruitless. I was in over my head with frustration. “You are not in the position to be angry with me. In fact, you should be careful. I have a potentially explosive story in the works, and I don’t think you want it getting out anytime soon.”

Something moved through his eyes then, forcing him to tense. Aware of what I was saying, he began to shake his head in disbelief.

“You are the one who needs to be careful. You can’t mess with this shit. I don’t care if you hate me. This will end badly for both of us. Watch yourself.”

He was just trying to scare me, and I knew it. But it wasn’t my first day on the job. I could handle myself.

Liam didn’t want any story to come out, which was evident enough. But it was also clear that he had something to hide if he didn’t want me lurking around in his business. Something was certainly there, waiting for me to find it, and I had the feeling his old bosses would have something for me to work from.

Regardless of his threats, I had the upper hand, and we both knew it.

He hated it, and that part brought me immense satisfaction.

Shrugging it off, I crossed my arms over my chest. “You think that scares me? I won’t let you dictate my next move, not when you clearly don’t want anything to do with me.”

Liam’s teeth ground together. “I’m trying to help you. You’re just too blinded by this to see it.”

I recoiled at that, beyond worked up by his words. He wanted me to believe he had my best interest in mind when he was the one who stormed into my office and tried to corner me into silence.

“If you think ambushing me at work would help your cause—”

A knock at the door immediately shattered my thoughts, and I straightened up, letting that raw anger disappear. Liam looked just as confused, turning to look over his shoulder.

To my surprise, Sienna was there, opening the door and poking her head in once she got our attention.

That tension was thick enough to touch as she stood there, catching us both in the heat of our bickering. The awkwardness of it made me cringe from behind the desk. And yet, she didn’t seem to notice as a smile moved across her face.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but I was hoping to ask you about something coming up,” Sienna began, stepping inside.

Swallowing against my dry throat, I tried to ignore how flustered I felt. “Sure, what can I do for you?”

“Well, I’m putting on a toy drive for local families in need, and I happen to need some extra hands. Would you be able to spare a few hours from your week to help us prepare for the event? It’s a great cause, and I’d love to see you there,” she said, wearing her passion for the cause as she often did.

While it wasn’t the most ideal time to be asked, I didn’t mind helping. I had helped with plenty of events around town before, and I was always ready to help the community.

I nodded. “Of course. I don’t mind lending a hand. Just let me know where and when you need me.”

Sienna smiled. “That means so much. Thank you, Cora.”

While I half expected her to turn and leave, Sienna pivoted on her heel until she faced Liam. “In fact, would you mind helping too, Liam? It seems a lot of others are busy, so I’m asking wherever I can.”

Liam’s brows went up in surprise, just as taken aback by the question. It was a stark contrast to his previous anger.

Flustered all the same, he blinked back at her and cleared his throat. “Sure. Count me in.”

It seemed neither of us wanted to acknowledge the fight we had been waist-deep in just moments before Sienna entered the office, and neither of us could deny what the alpha’s wife wanted from us.

At once, Sienna’s face brightened even more, looking beyond happy about our cooperation. “That’s great! You two will be working together for the next few weeks, then. I’m glad I could catch you both.”

My heart dropped immediately, dreading what that would entail.

I agreed to help, but I didn’t think I’d be stuck with Liam—the man I currently despised.

What were the chances?
