From what I could tell, we have a few days at best.

A few days wasn’t much time to plan, although that was likely his hope. He probably wanted to catch us off-guard and surprise us, like I had to him and the others.

There was no questioning it. I had to do something about it.

Although, with the pack running ahead, I knew it wasn’t the best moment to be discussing it.

Thank you for telling me. We should press on. We’re almost there.

Without arguing, Jane fell into step with me, and we continued through the woods. Her slight pain and confusion simmered away until I no longer felt it through our bond, and I could relax once she did the same.

It seemed the others were already too far ahead for us to catch up, but since I instructed Logan beforehand to keep going once we reached the lake, they were likely already on their way back to the pack grounds.

Without worrying about anyone else, I guided Jane toward the lake, pushing through the trees as the water’s surface came into view.

The two of us wandered down until we reached the shore, and with my learned control, I forced myself to shift back.

Returning to my human form was always disorienting, but as I regained my bearings and stood to my full height again, I walked into the water, my mind occupied by what Jane had said about her premonition.

With a deep breath, I stood in waist-deep water and basked in the moonlight. It lit up the secluded space and beautifully danced along the water’s surface.

I wanted that moment to be an undisturbed one, but with that pressing decision that needed to be made looming over me, I felt like I couldn’t fully appreciate it.

I wish I had the clear answers I needed, but I didn’t know what to do. Storming the pack grounds ran the risk of innocent people dying, as well as them refusing to follow me. But not acting at all would leave us vulnerable to an attack from Sam and his closest followers.

I wasn’t willing to risk the safety of my pack, but I didn’t want to turn my back on the others either.

The water moved from behind me, and I sensed as Jane approached.

“Are you not concerned about Sam?” She asked, voice hesitant. I could only assume she didn’t want to push.

With a sigh, I murmured, “I am. There’s a decision I have to make, and I can’t make it lightly. But in the meantime, I won’t let Sam ruin our time together.”

When she stood next to me, I glanced at Jane and took in her beauty as the moonlight graced her body, reminding me again how much she resembled a goddess. Despite how the others used to ridicule her for her appearance, I thought she looked incredible. Worthy of praise until I could no longer speak it.

Smoothly, I hooked an arm around her back and pulled her closer by the waist. Looking down at her, I pressed my palm against her cheek and took in how easily she seemed to melt from my touch alone.

“I refuse to give him that power.”

Jane swallowed thickly. “I’m glad.”

Feeling impatient, I closed that space between us and melded my lips with hers.

Chapter 23 - Jane

It was a challenge not to appreciate just how beautiful the night was as the moonlight gleamed across the lake’s surface and how invigorating the run had been.

The water felt cool to the touch, yet it hardly did anything to interrupt our constant warmth as we soaked it all in. Glancing over at Levi as he enjoyed the privacy of the concealed water hole brought me a sense of peace and appreciation, and it seemed even more special knowing that he planned it for us.

But when we both had enough, Levi took my hand and gestured in the direction of a small cabin.

“Here’s where we’ll be staying. We have a nice view of the lake and everything.”

Immediately impressed, I followed his lead, still aware of just how naked we were. Fortunately, we didn’t need to go far before we reached the front door. He let us both in and immediately grabbed two robes that had been waiting for us.

“For you,” he murmured, handing one to me while he used the other to cover himself up. Moving further inside, he lit a lantern, and the space came alive.

As I tied the belt around myself, I gazed around the cabin in awe.
