"Lucien said you pointed him here?" I questioned again when she didn’t respond.

"Can he see me, too?" she asked.

When I glanced back, he was looking around the dilapidated room.

"No, we each have a different gift. Mine is that I can see and talk to spirits. How long have you been here?"

"How did you get your gift?" she asked, ignoring my question. This was definitely not just a child.

"What if you answer my question and I'll answer yours," I countered, not giving in that easily. My palms were clammy as I stared her down with a confidence I didn’t quite feel. She was more than a little terrifying.

This got a smile from her. "Are you going to stay and play a game with me?"

"I'm just here for a visit, but I’lll see you tomorrow, too. How old are you, Hazel?" I asked in a rush before she could run away.

"I'm this many," she said as she held up seven fingers.

I smiled but noted that it was strange that her speech changed to that of a younger child, but I did my best not to show that in my face.

"What a big girl you are! I love your hair," I told her.

"So, how did you get your gift?" she reverted back to that more serious tone she had at first.

"I was in a really bad car accident and died for a few minutes before I was pulled back. When I came back I could see and talk to ghosts.” Her eyes widened in a strange excitement but I didn’t stop there. “Was there something in here you wanted Lucien to see?" I questioned.

"He died, too?" she asked, pointing to Lucien.

"Yes, he did," I replied.

"She took it," she said in the young kid's voice.

I stepped a little closer, "‘She?’ Is she in here?"

Hazel glanced around the room before she nodded her head yes.

“What is it?”

She didn’t answer me this time.

"Did you see where she took it?" I tried again.

She shook her head no and scrambled up from the bench before she disappeared. A split second later, another spirit stood in front of me.

"You don't talk to her without talking to me," a harsh voice bit out. A teenage ghost was standing in front of me. Her hair was long and black and tied back in a ponytail. She crossed her arms in front of her and glared at me with black-lined eyes.

She opened her mouth to speak when a scream echoed from the doorway.

The scream had cleared the room leaving us in silence. Not only that, the room itself had changed as well.

What was previously a large, clean playroom, was now a dingy, abandoned room. The walls were peeling and floor tiles cracked. The remnants of toys were boxed in the corner and dust and debris littered every surface.

“Is this how you saw the room?” I breathed out in shock.

“If you mean a dusty mess, yes, come on,” Lucien said urgently as he pulled me this time.

We were out the door in minutes and my chest tightened at the empty hall.

“Where the hell did they go?” I gasped, staring around before calling out. “Eli? Jayce?!”
