Eli wraps an arm around my waist as he leans against the door frame, pulling me closer to him.

Leo takes a big gulp, before returning his eyes to me. “So, you see ghosts?”

“Not only do I see them, I’m able to talk to them,” I say, letting a smile tip my lips. It feels oddly freeing to admit our powers to someone. But after everything we’d accidentally involved this poor sheriff in, I feel like it's time.

I just can’t figure out why she didn’t trust him anymore.

“Have you always been able to do that?” he questions before I can overthink.

“No, it’s a newer gift. Eli, Jayce, and I were in a horrible accident and we all coded. But we were revived and we each got ghostly gifts,” I explain, pausing to see if he has any questions. Even I know how insane it sounds.

“That’s a wicked story. Do you have any proof of these gifts?” he asks, eyeing each of us. There’s skepticism in that gaze but he’s not dismissing us. That’s a start.

Lucien steps forward, “Well, I—or one—was a ghost. That is until Raven brought me back.”

“Bullshit,” the sheriff comments, looking over Lucien. Well, he wasn’t dismissing us.

“Well, if it wasn’t for his psycho ex, we wouldn’t have these powers and Lucien would still be haunting his old college,” Jayce says, handing me a cup of coffee and offering Eli an energy drink.

“Thanks,” we say in unison before he disappears back into the kitchen.

“Now that’s a story I want to hear more about, but it’s not the right time. I do want to know more about these gifts. Raven can talk to ghosts, what about you three?” Leo questions. He was compartmentalizing the mindfuck and I can’t blame the guy.

“I don’t really know what my gift is. I wished for something of Pandora’s and it appeared in my hand. It’s only happened twice,” Lucien offers up. “I guess life is my gift,” he says with a wink at me. We all know he’s relieved to not have a constant connection to that realm.

Eli gives me a little squeeze before he starts talking, "Mine isn’t the coolest of all of them, but I get visions. They are of the ghosts' last minutes or an emotional memory. It wouldn’t be too bad but I end up in a trance or seizure-like state. I’ve broken a table or two.”

“And me, well, I can feel the spirits' emotions and they can talk through me. Most recently, I’ve been getting dreamlike visions. Okay, more like nightmares,” Jayce says as he joins us, giving Lucien a coffee before taking a drink of his.

“And all of this from an accident?” Leo asks.

“Yes, we all agree that it’s because we died and came back,” I tell him.

“So, did just the inheritance bring you here?” Leo questions, raising a brow.

“Yes and no,” I answer, snuggling into Eli at the memory. “Pandora appeared to me next to our office and she didn’t come back to me until recently.”

His face falls at my words, he must have held out hope that she was still breathing. “So, she is dead then?”

I nod as I gulp, “Yes, we have been searching for her here.”

A tear rolls down his beautiful face and I have to blink back the ones that threaten to spill on my own.

“I’m at your disposal. Anything you need help with, I want to get her to a proper resting place,” Leo tells all of us. “I’ve never given up hope that she’s alive, maybe this can give me some closure.”

“Well, we were looking at our footage and noticed a figure. Want to take a peek at it and see if you can make out who it is?” Jayce asks, hopefully.

“Yeah, I’d love to,” Leo perks up a little at his words.

That’s all that Jayce needs to run and grab the laptop. This is the shit his geeky, little heart lives for. He sets it on the table and kneels next to Leo as he pulls up the video of the black figure.

“It’s not the best quality, but it’s what we have to go on. We’re going to upgrade the gear but we haven’t had the time,” Jayce explains as he plays the footage.

We all hold our breath as we watch Leo studying the screen. He rewinds and plays it a couple of times before finally giving up.

“It’s too dark to make out who it is,” he sighs, slumping back a little in his chair. “I thought I would be more help.”

“Well, not throwing us in the looney bin is a good first step,” Eli says.
