My sense of smell is weak, strange considering I’m an omega who wants to find her scent matched alpha one day.

Or do I? What if Jake isn’t a scent match?

He smiles, but it’s not as happy as he is trying to make me believe. “Then I have something to tell you.”

Jake always knows how to comfort me without words. He’s been my rock ever since we left our hometown.

“About the Professor?” I ask. My eyes widening because I know he’s been talking to his professor about our business.

“He wants to meet you.” His words melt away some of the tension that has been building inside me.

“Yes! That’s fantastic news.”

You wouldn’t believe it was by the way he looks at me. Only then do I see that there’s a hint of uncertainty in his gaze.

“Is everything okay?” I ask.

He nods. “Ah shit. Sorry I forgot to ask. Was it Ava?”

“Yeah.” I notice the subtle shift in the conversation. I want to tell him what was on the USB. How am I supposed to keep secrets from him when he does so much for me?

“It’s okay.” He covers the top of my hand with palm and strokes away my concerns. “Only talk when you’re ready.”

I nod. His words melt away some of the tension that had been building inside me. I hate that I can’t tell him, but I have to protect her. He understands that more than most people.

“Take a seat, this is nearly ready,” he says as I drag out a seat around the small table.

Jake dips a spoon into the pan and sips on the liquid. “Perfect.” He wipes his mouth as he walks to me. “You look deep in thought.”

I bite my lip, contemplating how much to divulge. I exhale, deciding to reveal only what I can without betraying Ava’s trust. “She knows I have a sex toy business. She has a proposal for me.”

He grins at me, rushing over and pressing a kiss on my lips. His face lights up. “Maybe she stole some of the billionaire’s money and can help you out.”

I burst into laughter. The sound echoing throughout our sparse apartment. One day, though, we’ll have so much more than this. Jake and I will have it all.

Jakes rushes back to the stove, and he stirs the simmering pot of noodles. He glances up at me with a warm smile, but I still see a flicker of concern in his eyes.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” I say. “Please. I can see it on your face. But I can also feel it.”

He sighs. “I spoke to Professor Baldwin,” he says and pauses, purposefully taking a fork and handing it to me with noodles wrapped around it. “Can you taste it?”

I open my mouth and take the ramen, savoring the spicy flavor that explodes on my tongue. “I can.”

“It’s coming back. Your senses are coming back,” he says with a massive smile on his face.

“It is.”

But even the delicious taste can’t distract me from the worry etched on his face, the worry that he’s tried to erase. I chew slowly, giving him a meaningful look, silently urging him to talk.

Jake takes a deep breath and rests against the kitchen counter. “Professor Baldwin wants to meet you tomorrow.”

I smile. “I told you I can do that.”

“Without me there,” Jake mutters.

I narrow my eyes. “What difference does it make if you’re there or not?” Jake looks at me with unease as I explain. “I mean... for him.”

His eyes dart away for a moment before meeting mine again. “He said very little over the phone, just mentioned it was important, and he would organize a meeting for you and him in private.”
