I giggle. “You’re still funny, Mister Montgomery. Especially as I’m a scentless omega.”

“You’re not scentless.” As soon as our eyes lock, a playful smirk dances on his lips. “Give your godfather another hug.”

My body is calm as he picks me up and holds me against him.

“I missed you, Walker.” My voice is shaky as I try to hold back my tears. I haven’t seen him since my mother took us to live with our new family. Only one year after my father passed.

“I missed you too, baby girl. I’m sorry it took me so long to find you.” He stares into my eyes. “But you know I had to find you, don’t you?”

“Did you promise my dad?” I ask. A small sob releases without warning.

I miss my dad so much, and only Walker knows how I feel.

The guilt that I’m to blame.

The longing to be held by my dad again.

Walker and my father had a close bond, and they spent many hours talking about anything and everything. They were so different. It’s a strange relationship. Dad was ex-military. Walker was for a very short time until he took over one of his father’s business. Now Walker is a CEO and owns multiple businesses.

Walker is the only one who knows how much I miss my dad. I know he feels the same way. Only he knows how close I was to him. Not even Jake knows that much.

“When do you finish work?” he asks.

I lift my wrist, checking the time. “In twenty minutes.”

“I’ll wait.”

He stares at me the whole time, and it feels like a long night as I watch the clock. I keep smiling at Walker as each of those twenty minutes crawls by.

I serve customers, wipe the bar and take away empty glasses while Walker drinks another bourbon. I notice how much he likes to scan his eyes on everything in the bar.

And me—it seems.

The moment the clock ticks to ten o’clock, Walker takes my hand and leads me out of the bar, into the quieter lobby, and then outside to the parking lot. All the while, he still holds my hand tightly.

“I’m not going to run away.” My voice is full of humor.

“I know,” he whispers into my hair, holding me tightly against his neck. “Because you know I’ve got you.”

Our gazes lock as I consider his words. The same words as the night he rescued me.

“I’ve got you now. I won’t let you go.”

But he should’ve. He should’ve let me go and stopped my father.

“I missed you, baby girl. I’m sorry it took me so long to find you.” He presses a fob in his hand and the car ahead sounds.

I gulp back a taste of his sweet scent, like a Danish pastry covered in the sweetest berries.

I can smell him.

“You ran from me once and I’m not letting you go now.” He presses a kiss on my sweaty forehead. “Do you want that?”

“I... I suppose so,” I murmur as he opens the door and slides into the back seat of the car. He positions himself in the middle of the car. “Come here.” He taps his lap.

I crawl across the seat and straddle his thighs.

The doors lock with a click of the remote in his hand.
