I spot a black truck parked outside the old warehouse, its engine rumbling softly. Even in idle, the smell of diesel envelops the air.

My senses are alive.

My heart races as I drive past the warehouse and check all around.

Apart from the truck, it appears empty. I take a deep breath and turn the car back toward my meeting place. Driving the car until it’s beside the black truck.

I step out of the car and glance around. I don’t turn off the engine until I know for sure this isn’t a ruse.

“Hello Bunnykins.” A familiar soft voice makes me spin on my heels.

My legs weaken when my sister, Ava, walks from the back of her truck and stands smiling at me.

Her long dark hair, pulled in a high ponytail. Her natural curls straightened like we always did when we were kids. But it’s her gym honed body that makes her look totally different.

So different—Long lean muscles and she looks much stronger than the body she had when she left my stepfather’s home.

I stop gawking at her, slam my car door and run to her, my shoes clicking over the gravel path.

“Oh my god, Ava,” I cry when I reach her. I wrap my arms around her and hold her. “Look at you. You’re... gorgeous.”

“And you look and smell like…” She holds my shoulders and stares at me. “You smell like you’re going into heat. Even your perfume is...” Her eyes widen. “You shouldn’t have come. Alphas will smell you.”

I flick my hand in the air. “I’m fine. I wouldn’t have missed seeing you for anything.”

“Get in my truck,” Ava says, taking my hand and leading me to the passenger side. She opens the door and helps me climb into the high vehicle. “I’m glad I asked you to meet me here and not in the center of town.”

“I can’t believe you found me.” Not only did Walker find me, but now Ava.

Who is next?

“What happened to you?” she asks. “I’ve been searching for you.”

I smile. “When Garrett bought you, I knew I was next, so I fled.” I sigh.

Ava nods her head gently. “I know. I hate alphas. They’re nothing but trouble.”

My shoulders sag as I listen to Ava and think how much I’ve avoided alphas in an emotional capacity at least, but right now all I can think about is being knotted. “What happened to you?”

She shakes her head. “I can’t tell you.”

My eyes round and my mouth opens in a wide O, before I murmur, “Is it that bad?”

“I signed a nondisclosure agreement.”

“But you escaped from Garrett.”

She purses her lips. “Yeah.”

Ava turns on the ignition and the truck’s engine rumbles to life. She pulls out of the gravel lot and onto the paved road.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

Ava glances at me, her eyes serious. “We’ll drive around and talk at the same time. I need your help, but the way you smell, you’re going to attract alphas.”

“What kind of help?”

She hesitates for a moment, then sighs. “I told you I hated alphas.”
