“Hello,” Mom answers within two rings.

“How could you...” I stammer as hot blood zips through my veins. “How could you sell another of your daughters? Dad would hate the woman you became.”

“Ava...” Her voice is soft, making me doubt everything. “Is that you, baby?”

I choke back a harsh chuckle. “Baby... You’ve treated your daughters like pieces of meat at a market. And it’s not Ava. It’s Ella.”

“Ella, where the hell are you?” Her tone is suddenly sharp.

“Hiding from your husband.”

“He’s a good man.”

“He sold his daughters, and now you’re letting him sell yours. You’re despicable.”

“Your sister Layla has gone to a very nice pack in New York. One is a billionaire, and he’s a powerful man.”

“But did she want it?” I retort.

“Of course, she’s an omega. All omegas want a pack. You will too. Why don’t you come home and we’ll find you a nice pack.”

“I’ve got a pack,” I say, smiling. I know it’s a lie, but this way she’ll forget about me.

“You... You have a pack? Have they claimed you?” Her voice is quiet, and I hear the heels of her shoes tapping over the tiled floor as she walks. “Have they?”

“They will soon.” It’s better for her to think that rather than being truthful about the true reality of the pack.

My gaze drifts to the breathtaking view from the bedroom window, to Gabe and Walker.

Are they my pack?

I spin to the sound of my bedroom creaking open. Jake smiles as he walks toward me, holding a large box.

“Who are you speaking to?” he mouths.

I press my hand over the handset. “My mother.”

He lunges toward me, grabbing the cell and hitting the red button, disconnecting the call. “What the hell are you doing?”

I want to scream.

“Layla left me a message. They sold her. I was upset and needed to get it off my chest.”

“Oh Fuck, Ella. How long were you talking to her for?”

I shrug my shoulders. “Only a minute or so.”

“She might have traced your number.”

I shake my head. “She’s not the problem. My stepfather is.”

“She is too. What don’t you get about her involvement?” His voice is low as he strides to the bed. “She is allowing her daughters to be sold.”

I blow out a deep breath. I know he is right, but I want to believe he’s not.

And as I don’t want an argument, I take the car keys from his hand, saying, “I’m going to the cafe.”
