“Thank you for telling me the truth,” she whispers, her voice stronger now. “But I need to be alone.”

“You need some time, but remember, I’m here to help you. You need me right now.”

She shakes her head and whispers, “I’m going home tomorrow.”

“No, you’re staying,” I growl. “Gabe and I are your alphas, Ella. You’ll have to come to terms with that knowledge, eventually.”

She swallows. “I know you are, but I can’t accept Gabe. Which means I can’t accept this pack.”

“You have no choice.” I try to hold back my alpha tone.

Her back stiffens, and her shoulders push back. “I’ve been through so much, Walker, so don’t tell me what I can and can’t do. If I reject Gabe as my alpha, I reject him. It has nothing to do with you.”

“You don’t know the full story about Gabe.”

“I know they wanted Ava, not me.” She looks out at the sea. “It’s always Ava.”

“Don’t be a brat, Ella. She was kidnapped, too.”

Her eyes narrow as she glares at me, thrusting her wrists in the air, showing me her scars. “But they didn’t try to kill her.”

I swallow. “Sorry.”

She shakes her head. “I’m going home.”

“This is your home.”

“You bought me for five days, nothing more.” She slams her hands on her hips before she goes silent for a moment. “Do you think because you took me through my heat that I’m yours?”

My stomach churns. She doesn’t remember agreeing to be our omega. “You are.”

“No. I’m Jake’s omega.”

“You’re mine and Gabe’s too.”

She shakes her head. A storm of emotions brew behind her tear-filled eyes. “I can’t accept him.”

“Why not?”

“Because I know Gabe and his pack wanted me dead.”

I shake my head. “No, you’ve got it wrong.”

“Walker,” she sobs. “They wanted me dead. And h... how do... you know they won’t come back for me? I was supposed...” She hiccups back a sob. “To die.” Her voice gasps as she says the last word.

“Because I won’t let anyone hurt you,” I say, determined.

As she opens her mouth to speak, her eyes dart frantically around the beach, searching. “I think someone knows I’m here.”

“Nobody is here.” I try to reason.

“I feel like someone is watching me, waiting for the right moment to kill me.” Every word that escapes her quivering lips is laced with fear, as if she knows something terrible is about to happen.

“You’re scared and overreacting.”

“Yes, I am fucking scared.”

The sharp edge in her voice slices through me, sending a chilling shiver down my spine.
