She scrolls her contents, but screams when bright lights flash inside our vehicle. “Oh, my god. He’s caught up to us already.”

“Keep calm and call Gabe.”

My heart races as I stare in the rearview mirror at the pursuing vehicle. A sleek black sedan that matches the darkness of the night. The car also matches the one Ella described had been at the cafe again.

For one moment, his headlights dip and see his contorted face.

“Just lose him!” she cries as shaky fingers try to find Gabe’s name.

“I’m trying to lose him! But if we can’t get hold of Gabe, you’re going to jump out of the car at the public access that leads to the beach and then run to Walker’s.”

“What if he realizes?” She glances over her shoulder as the car behind us narrows the gap, its headlights bright in my rearview mirror.

“I’m going to drive around. We’ll go into the town, and lose him and when I do, that’s when we’ll go there.” I take another turn, this time onto a side street and toward the town.

I glance in my rearview mirror and watch as the car continues driving without turning. “What the fuck is he up to?”

But I don’t stop and wonder. I don’t trust that he’ll just disappear without a trace, but I know these roads better than he does. I hope I lose him in the maze of streets.

As I weave in and out of light night traffic, the rumble of my engine grows louder, drowning out the blood pounding in my ears. But it’s the adrenaline coursing through my veins that fuels my reflexes as I maneuver fluidly around the city.

I turn into the next street and let out a breath, trying to calm my racing heartbeat. “I think we lost him.” For Ella’s sake, I try to keep my voice steady.

Ella releases a shaky breath. “Thank god. I thought for sure we were going to die back there.”

I glance over at her, my heart still racing. “Me too,” I say. “Now I need to get you to the beach.”

“Go straight to Walker’s house.”

I shake my head. “No, I don’t want him to know where you are. At least, not until you’re safe.”

“What about you?” Her distressed eyes find mine. My heart pounds, knowing how concerned she is about my life.

Just when we think we’re safe, an engine behind us roars as it closes in on us.

Tears lace Ella’s eyes as she hits Gabe’s name on her cell.

“Gabe... It’s Ella. We’re being followed. Can... Can you meet me?” Her eyes meet mine in a moment of panic.

“Ask him!”

“Can you meet me on the beach at the public access near to your house?” Her voice stammers. “Someone tried to break into the house, but we escaped. I think it’s the man who kidnapped me.”

She listens to Gabe and nods. “Jake’s going to lose the car and then drop me there.”

“Fuck! Of course. I’ll bring a gun. Just in case.” Gabe’s voice is deep enough to hear through her cell.

“Thank you.” Her voice is shaky as fear courses through her veins, not only for the pursuit, but because she has to trust Gabe.

She disconnects the phone and stares ahead before turning to me. “What about you?”

“I’ll continue driving around until I know you’re safe and in Walker’s panic room. Then I’ll drive there, and you can ask Gabe to open the gate to his home. If the car follows, Walker or Gabe will kill him outside the house.”

The car speeds down the road, through the labyrinth of small side roads.

Ella nods, her eyes still wide with fear. “Okay,” she says.

We’re going to make it, I can feel it, but it doesn’t stop me from choking out a laugh. “He knows these streets better than I can imagine. So it’s time to head to Walker’s house.”
