My heart stops beating for a moment. “Hunt.”

“Yes, and it’s my fault he found you.”

“I heard him. They came looking for you. Not me,”

He holds my arms and steps back, his eyes lift to mine again.

“There’s more to tell me, isn’t there?”

He nods at the man on the ground. His captor. “He was my ex pack mate’s brother and he wanted me dead. He paid your kidnapper to help with the search.”

“Because they thought he knew my scent?”

He nods. “And I’m sure they came to some monetary agreement.”

“Gabe walks to the desk, pressing his palms on the edge and lowering his head to stare.

“What made you contact Walker when I was kidnapped?” I ask.

He glances up to look at me, then releases an audible sigh before he says, “I picked up the clothes the kidnapper sent us. Your sweater and your sister’s scarf. The pack was discussing the scarf, handing it around. I picked up your sweater, and for the first time in life, my alpha purred. I had to get out of the room and get rid of the sweater.”

I suck back a breath and ask, “Nobody noticed?”

“By the time I got back into the room, the pack agreed to your death, and I watched as the kidnapper smiled. And you and your sister started to scream.”

Tears stream down my face as I recall the same moment when my heart felt like it stopped as his sharp knife slid over my wrist.

Gabe lifts his hand to his face, covering his eyes. “And then you stopped screaming, but your mouth remained open. He didn’t cut through your skin too deeply. It was like he wanted your death to be slow. But I knew I had little time to save you and I left the house and contacted Walker.”

“But why Walker?”

“A few days before, we’d watched a press conference, and he was with your father asking for help. I knew Walker was in pain, and I knew it was because of you.”

My shaky fingers cover my wobbly lips.

Gabe lowers his hand, his pale lips pressed tight as a single tear slides down his cheek. “I was too. I never felt pain like it. It was…” He stammers as his eyes glance at the floor. “Like I felt you through a bond. And I know that’s ridiculous because we don’t have a bond, but it’s true. I knew at that moment you were my omega, and I’d do anything to have you in my life.”

“Even if that meant betraying your pack?”

Gabe stares at me for a moment. “Anything.”

“You saved me … and Ava.”

“I had to. I knew you were my mate. I couldn’t let you die,” he whispers. “But I also couldn’t have my pack hunt you or your sister again.”

“Gabe…”

“I need to tell you everything. And it answers your question of why they wanted me dead.” He swallows. “A switch flipped inside me when he removed your sister’s blindfold. And her head was turned to you. She was silent. It was like she didn’t want you to hear her fear, but she couldn’t hold back because then she vomited on the floor and collapsed.”

Tears roll down my eyes thinking of my brave sister. “She never told me. I knew she’d been sick, but...”

That’s why she’s broken. Not because of alphas, but because of seeing me dying in front of her.

“So I killed them … I killed my pack that day.”

My mouth drops open as I stare wide-eyed at him.

“You killed your pack?” I finally say, repeating to make sure I heard right.
