“You just met him!”

There’s no use responding to her outrage and stooping to her level, so I calmly say, “There are donuts on the counter for you. And we’re going to dinner at seven.”

She stalks into the kitchen with a humph, but quickly pokes her head back around the wall dividing the two rooms. She’s already got half a donut in her mouth. “When you say we…”

“Yes, Midas too.”

Her eyes roll, and I bit my lip to keep from snapping at her. Rising to the bait only ever makes it worse.

When Midas gets off the call, he sits down next to me and pulls me into a kiss.

“What’s that for?”

“Just wanted you to know how grateful I am that I found you.” He kisses me again, and I melt into him. It’s not like the passionate kisses we’ve shared before. This one is domestic, all the sweeter for its intimacy. But that only lasts a few moments before Midas deepens it into something more dangerous, grabbing the back of my neck and holding me still against his lips as he tortures me with his tongue.

“And to remind you of what you have to look forward to tonight,” he whispers when he pulls away.

“Eww,” Finley groans from the kitchen entryway. “Go to dinner on your own. I don’t want to witness that all night.”

“You’re coming,” I say firmly. “It’s non-negotiable.”

We stare at each other, but she can tell I mean business. She breaks and stomps into her room, letting the door slam behind her.

Midas gives me a wide-eyed look as if to say, you’re going to let her get away with that?

“She just needs to get it out of her system.” I respond to the unasked question and then crawl onto his lap. “Finley deals with uncertainty and fear with anger. It happened when mom was in the hospital too. Trust me, she’s not usually like this. She just needs to feel what she’s feeling. Me trying to stifle that won’t help.”

“You know her well.” He studies me for a moment and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. “You’ll make a good queen.”

I laugh nervously. It’s hard to believe anyone would think that of me. “I don’t know about that.”

“A big part of leading is knowing your people, and your enemies, recognizing what will work with each one. It’s not always the same.”

“What works with your brother? What does he need?”

Midas tilts his head in thought. He doesn’t answer, but I’m not really expecting him to. Right now, I know exactly what Midas needs. A tension release.

Taking his hand, I stand up and lead him into my bedroom, which is thankfully on the opposite side of the apartment from Finley’s room. But our walls are thin, so I still tell Midas we need to be quiet the moment I shut the door.

“I know exactly how to keep you quiet,” he says with a dangerous smirk.

I quiver at his words, goosebumps breaking out over my skin, anticipation building in my gut. “What do you have in mind?”

“On your knees.”

I swallow. My pulse speeds up, knees hitting the floor without a moment’s hesitation. I love when he gets commanding. He’s not the only one who needs this. It’s just what I need to distract myself from the worries about my sister and his brother’s challenge.

He unclasps his belt and unzips his dress pants. They’re fitted enough to stay up on his hips even as he pulls his cock through the opening in his boxer briefs.

I stare at the hard length of him unabashedly and lick my lips. The desire to taste him, to have him fill my mouth, consumes me. My body feels tingly and hungry. Greedy for him.

“Open.”

That single word feels like the most erotic word in the English language. The area between my legs aches as my breasts tighten. I wet my lips again and open my mouth.

He holds the base of his cock and drags the tip along my hair line before making his way across my jaw. When he reaches my lips, he traces them one at a time before shoving into my mouth. His right hand smooths over the top of my head, cupping the back of my skull.

“Wider. And don’t move.”
