I sigh, knowing he’s right. If this is going to work, we shouldn’t lie to each other. But I also know that he won’t like what I was about to do. So I give him only the first step. “I was going next door to thank Jethro for the party. I didn’t get to say goodbye since we left so… abruptly.”

He studies me for a long minute, like he senses there’s more to it, but decides not to push. “You shouldn’t be around other dragons without me.”

“Isn’t he one of your closest friends? I can’t imagine he’d hurt me.”

“He wouldn’t.” His hand skitters up my arm, and he follows the movement with his eyes.

“Then what’s the problem with me talking to him?”

“I don’t like it.”

It dawns on me then, and my lips lift in a grin. “You’re jealous.”

“Yes.”

I love how Midas just says it like it is. One word. A clear confirmation.

I teasingly poke him in the side. “You left me alone with Lennox.”

“Lennox is mated, and I trust him.”

“And you don’t trust Jethro?”

“I don’t trust anyone apart from Lennox.” The hand that had been lazily brushing up my arm, moves around my back, pressing between my shoulder blades, plastering my chest against his. “And you.”

“That’s kind of sad.”

“It’s life.” He kisses me at last, and I lose focus for a minute. But when we break for breath, I’m still thinking about what he said.

“Will my life be like that? Constantly having to be on guard?”

A heaving breath leaves his chest. He takes my hand and leads me over to the couch, pulling me down onto his lap. “I won’t lie to you. There will be dragons who will like nothing more than to take us down. You’ll have to be careful.”

“Just when I was starting to give in—”

“You were going to give in?” The excitement in his voice makes my pulse quicken. “Does that mean I can hire a moving company?”

My laugh vibrates through to my core. I love seeing this eager side of him, but I need to pump the breaks just a little. “Not yet. But… I don’t want to lose you.”

“Then don’t.”

The trouble is I might lose him whatever choice I make. My resolve to stop the challenge between him and his brother hardens.

Midas sucks a breast through my shirt before pulling the fabric up my waist. My insides hum, anticipating what he might do next.

“Gross!” Finley stands at the top of the stairs with a horrified look. She’s got a towel wrapped around her, but she’s still dripping wet from the pool. Thankfully, Midas doesn’t seem to mind water on the floor, or at least he doesn’t show it.

“I thought we were going to have dinner,” she says.

“I am.” Midas turns back to me, his hand drawing my shirt up a little higher.

“Ew.”

“Leave,” Midas barks.

I push him gently and struggle to pull down my shirt. “She can’t just leave.”

“There’s an hour before dinner, and I don’t plan on having my appetizer with an audience.”
