Leona says, “I’ll be back by dinner or maybe the show, Mr. Baker.” The way her cheeks darken, I wonder what she thinks might delay her past a couple of hours. I’m in favor of whatever it is.

“Have a good time, Miss DeRosa.” Brian disconnects the call.

With her hand still in mine I lower both to her thigh. “Is this okay, Leona?”

Shifting her hand, she threads her fingers through mine. “Yes.”

“You’ll tell me if I do anything you don’t like?” My cock is already responding just to the sweet touch of her hand in mine. I never want to let her go.

“I’ll tell you.”

Cade didn’t lie. The Burger Barn had amazing food and now, standing at an overlook with his strong body only an inch behind mine, all I want is to feel his touch. Well, I also want to know exactly what he is. There are a slew of questions floating around in my head.

He skims a hand over my shoulder and the electricity shoots between us as if we’re both charged by lightning.

I lean back against his chest and he wraps his arms around me. “Why am I so attracted to you?”

“I’m very good-looking.” He laughs.

I can’t help joining in the amusement. “That’s true, but not exactly what I meant.”

Nuzzling my neck, he kisses where it meets my shoulder. “I know. I don’t know how to answer.”

Turning to look him in the eye, I study him. “But there is an answer?”

He shrugs and tucks my hair behind my ear. “Maybe.”

The sky is bright over the rolling mountains of green where he brought me to a gorgeous overlook. It won’t be dark for several hours. I’m supposed to be back at the hotel for dinner at eight. “I don’t have my phone. What time is it?”

“Almost one.” He takes my hand from where I’ve got it tightly wrapped around my waist. “I could show you another beautiful view of these mountains.”

“Where do you live?” The first of my questions. “I found you last night and you were maybe a mile from the resort. Do you have a home or den somewhere nearby?”

“I have a house about twenty miles from where we met.” He studies my face as if he can read my mind. “Do you want to see my home?”

My cheeks are on fire. I hate that I blush at the drop of a hat. “I want to go somewhere we can talk. I want you to explain what I saw last night. I want to know why I want you so fiercely. What are you? Who are you? Why would someone want to hurt you? Why are you here with me instead of finding out who attacked you?”

His massive shoulders rise and fall with a sigh. “Lots of questions. Are you sure you want all those answers?”

No, is the truth, but I nod. I’m not sure of anything except that I don’t want him to take me back to the resort and never see him again.

Without a word, he leads me to his shiny black high-end car and opens the door for me. I’m embarrassed that at thirty years old, he’s the first man who’s ever held a car door for me. As soon as we’re on the road, he takes my hand and kisses my knuckles, then rests our hands on my leg as if we’ve been riding together for years and this is perfectly natural.

“Since once we arrive at my house, I need to respond to all those thoughts rolling around in your mind, may I ask you a question?” He gives my hand a gentle squeeze.

“Go ahead.” My life is not a secret.

“Why are you so keen to be away from your sister’s wedding party, Leona? Why did you escape to the woods last night?” His voice is gentle and the sound fills me as he speaks.

I could listen to that sound for a hundred years. The way he pronounces every syllable with equal importance. He says my name with so much reverence. I’m doomed if I stay near him, yet I can’t pull away. “My sister married the man I was engaged to for three years.”

While he still holds my hand gently and caresses my palm with his thumb, his other hand tightens to white knuckles on the wheel. His voice is tight. “When did you end the engagement?”

I pull my hand from his. “Derek ended it by telling me he’d met someone else. A short time later my sister announced that they were getting married. Then she told me it was better this way. That if I loved him, I would have set a date. Then he told me he was sorry he hadn’t said something sooner, but he didn’t want to hurt me.”
