“What do you mean? I've never had a problem before!”

“That was probably before the big data leak last month, too.”

What the actual fuck?

“Aubrey,” I tried with my best ‘you're the boss’ tone. “My boyfriend surprised me this weekend and he's only in town for a couple more days. I know I can't take the day off, but please, I just want to have lunch with him.”

I watched her expression soften as I spoke. It was probably the nicest look she'd ever given me.

“Did you finish the Peterson account yet?” she asked, throwing me off.

“Uh, yeah, I brought it upstairs earlier.”

A satisfied smirk took over her sour face.

“Good.”

All of a sudden a look of alarm scrunched her brows and she then threw her arms up.

“Oh, Freya, that's horrible! You go home and rest up. We can't have a flu like that spreading around the office. Call me on Wednesday and update me on your recovery.”

And then she Goddamn winked at me.

Aubrey leaned in and whispered just for my ears. “Those C.O. bastards on their golden thrones may be able to keep us locked in here nine to five, but they can't stop love!”

With that, she waved me off, and I whispered ‘thank you’ while hobbling away like I had some kind of stomach bug.

That woman, as sour as she could be sometimes, just had my back, and I would remember that. I'd have to think of some way to repay her.

I kept up my sick act all through the building, even playing it up for the security in the lobby. I got through the main doors and looked around, spotting Ashton immediately in that sexy old Firebird. He was leaning up all seductive and ass-first against the driver side door, arms crossed over his broad chest.

“So, bad news,” I told him, approaching from the front of the car. “My boss told me to go home because I'm ‘sick’.”

“Well, shit! You’re sick?” he asked, moving toward me already.

I just laughed, shaking my head.

“No! Evidently it’s some new policy that we can’t leave at lunch that nobody fucking told me about. Anyway, I told her my boyfriend was waiting for me and she, uh, she announced that I shouldn’t be in the office while I was sick and sent me away.”

I hesitantly looked up into his eyes as his hands cradled my face.

It was the first time I’d referred to him as my boyfriend, and I wasn’t sure how he’d feel about it.

“There are so many things I want to touch on in that statement,” he murmured, pressing his forehead to mine for a second as his lips split into a grin. “But let’s focus here first. Boyfriend? Did you just say that to get out of there, or do you see me that way?”

“Well, it seems pretty insane to tell a man that I love him, then to have some kind of hangup admitting that he’s my boyfriend.”

He hummed in agreement.

“But I suppose it goes both ways. I can’t claim one thing if you don’t feel the same way—”

He didn’t even give me a chance to finish my sentence. He smashed his mouth to mine and made me moan instantly.

I met him with every ounce of ferocity I felt for him, eager and hungry and desperate and needy. God help me, but I would never be able to rid myself of this man. Even if he died tomorrow, my life was forever altered, with a big, muscly, Ashton sized hole in it.

I’d barely nestled myself into his arms, absorbed in our kiss when he pulled away then popped a single kiss on my nose.

“I’d be a total moron to say no to an offer like that from a girl like you.”
