I scoffed, but laughed at the compliment.

“Sometimes, but those weren’t the kind of women I was looking for.”

“Were they relationships then?” She joined me on the couch, resting her legs across my lap.

“I mean, I guess you could call it that. It was mutually beneficial.”

“Relationship, as in, you were in love?”

I shook my head in denial.

“I’ve never been in love before you. When an attractive enough female Marine showed up around barracks, and she seemed interested in me too, we used each other as stress relief until one of us was relocated. It was as simple as that.”

“Women in your unit?”

“No, that would’ve been too messy. Besides, I stopped doing that as soon as I joined the Raiders. I was the leader. I couldn't be sleeping with my subordinates.”

“So you just stayed…celibate? For six years?”

I shrugged.

“As long as dick-in-fist doesn’t count, then yeah.”

She groaned in commiseration.

“That must have sucked!”

“The team meant more to me than sex.”

Which was why this, us, was such a big deal. Freya wasn’t just a good fuck. She was it for me, if she wanted me with any kind of permanence, anyway.

She must have figured that out too, because her brow furrowed and she looked at me. Like, really looked into my eyes as if she was trying to figure out what I was thinking. Luckily for her, I wasn’t that complicated. I fought for what I wanted, fuck everything else. And Freya? I fucking wanted her.

Freya wiggled around until she was sitting in my lap, her hands framing my face.

“It wasn’t worth it then, but it’s worth it now?” she whispered.

I shook my head.

“Not it. You. You are worth it.”

Tears were welling back up in her eyes as she lowered her mouth to mine.

“I love you so fucking much,” she breathed, voice tight and thick with emotion.

The moment was completely interrupted by a loud grumble that legit vibrated her chest against mine.

“Holy shit, someone’s hungry,” I mumbled, a smile cracking my face.

She giggled and pressed a tiny kiss to my nose.

“Someone told me they were bringing me to lunch and never did.”

“Let me fix that,” I told her, then stood, her body still tucked nice and sweet against me, legs dangling freely at my sides.

Freya shrieked and giggled and fought me until we got back to our door, where I carried her all the way back to the elevator. A family stood there, so I put her down and we behaved.

We hit up the street outside the hotel and found a seafood shack pretty much instantly. We didn’t even have to discuss it, we just went for it, both thinking the same thing.
