Another lull settled over us before Mom broke it again.

“And? You’ve decided what you’re going to do? Talk of weddings and babies is kind of crazy considering you’ve only been dating for what, a week?”

“Ash is going to move in,” I told her. “We already decided. There're still a lot of unknowns, but we’re ready to tackle them together. I’m really excited about the future, if I’m being honest.”

His chuckle from beside me caught my attention.

“Me too,” he admitted.

We got lost in a shared, goofy smile until Mom interrupted us.

“As sweet as this is, you can’t tease a mom with grandbabies and then not produce them. How long do I have to wait?”

We laughed at her outrageous question, and I just shook my head.

“I don’t know, Mom. The best thing I can do is promise you some, but not when you’ll get ‘em.”

She rolled her eyes at me and settled back in her seat, sipping that sparkling wine.

“Ugh, fine. But no more than…let’s say…three years. Deal?”

I laughed, but a look of satisfaction stretched Ash’s lips into a grin.

“Well, at least this metaphorical kid will have one grandparent who will smother them with love.”

Right. He doesn’t talk to his singular living parent. No wonder he’d gravitated toward Dad like a big brother. The man was alone in this world.

Not anymore, he’s not. He has me.

He’d always have me.

“I better go check on your father,” Mom sighed before finishing off her drink.

I did the same and patted Ashton’s thigh, ready to head out.

“I guess I’ll need to find someplace else to work then. Looks like Tom isn’t pulling his head out of his ass anytime soon.”

“You want to go back to the dealership?” Mom asked, now on her feet.

He nodded.

“Let me talk to him. He loves you, Ash. You know that. He’s mad and he’s hurt, but he’ll get over it. If I know my husband at all, I know he’ll eventually get to the place where he’s your biggest damn fan, and you’ll wish he was just a tad bit mad at you again.”

That felt like a long ways away, but I sincerely hoped that Mom was right. She’d probably consult her crystals in our names, asking for good luck.

I hugged her and she waved Ash in for a hug that he gave to her with a smile just to pacify her.

“Love you, Mom. Thanks for having our back.”

She nodded and waved as we went out the door.

“Love you too, sweetie! Maybe next time don’t tell your father when you’ve last had sex, huh? That would probably help.”

I choked and turned my back to her, hiding myself from embarrassment in the crook of Ashton’s shoulder.

He chuckled, amused at my horror.

“Goodnight, Karma!” he called over his shoulder, then walked me to the car.
