Why was it so hard to think of what to show people when they came to visit your hometown? Especially someone whose opinion really mattered.

“How about Millennium Park?” I asked her. “That’s a landmark worth seeing.”

“Sure! Isn’t that the chrome bean?”

I laughed.

“Yep. It’s the chrome bean.”

Freya chattered on about all kinds of shit, probably trying to either distract me, or distract myself from this so far incredibly unpleasant trip. I was glad to show her something other than death and the remnants of my childhood abuse, because Chicago was so much more than that.

“Do you ever think of coming back here?” she asked eventually as we got further into the city, approaching Millennium Park.

“Visiting? Isn’t that what we’re doing now?”

She gave me a deadpan expression.

“No, like, moving. Coming back. Making a home here.”

I shrugged, then shook my head.

“Nah, it gets too cold here. Besides, Vegas has all kinds of strip joints and gambling everywhere. Why would I want to leave that?”

She gave me a teasing slug on the shoulder.

“I have to tell you, for a guy that lived relatively abstinent, you’re kind of obsessed with naked women.”

I barked out a choked laugh.

She…wasn’t wrong. I loved the female form more than a lot of things. Plus, looking didn’t mean you had to fuck.

“Remind me to take you to a strip club some time,” I told her, navigating to a parking garage, which was fucking thirty bucks to park. Steep compared to when I was a kid. “I think you’d like it. Though, you might accidentally run into your buddy there. Heather, right? She seemed like the stripper sort.”

“Ash!” she smacked me again, laughing in disbelief.

I snickered.

Her friend totally seemed like the stripper sort. Like the one who actually enjoyed her work and was absolutely man crazy. That was all way back when, during that karaoke night we’d all had together, right before Freya had made her first move. Yeah, I’d practically had to beat Heather off with a stick that night. Boy crazy.

“It’s been a while since that Karaoke night. You still talk with your friends?”

Her outrage softened into a smile.

“Yeah, we still see each other most weeks. Actually, I’ve been meaning to ask you if you wanted to get together again. The girls want to meet you for reals.”

“Am I going to have to beat them off again?”

Freya rolled her eyes.

“Noooo. They know you’re mine, now,” she assured.

And damn, it felt good to hear her say that.

“Sure, set something up once I finally get back, and I’ll go.”

She mumbled her agreement as she finally looked around, seeing that we’d arrived.

“Wow, it’s not as pretty as I imagined,” she groused, looking around the parking garage.
