I pulled her into my chest, and holy shit, her fingers and toes were cold. Holding her closer, I shut my eyes and let the blackness take me.

Chapter 41

Freya

I was awake long before he was. The silvery streaks of morning had faded away to a warm glow, which told me it was getting to be late morning. Well, that and my grumbling stomach.

“Is that a wild animal?” came his grouchy but sweet morning voice.

I huffed a laugh.

“No, that’s the sound of me starving to death while you sleep the day away.”

His low, rumbly laugh made goosebumps spark up all over my skin.

“Then let’s get you some food,” he murmured, turning over to sit up and rub at his eyes.

I wasn’t really worried about food. I was far more worried about him.

“How’re you doing?” I asked, rubbing my palm down his back, massaging it a little.

The moan that spilled from his lips turned my goosebumps to freaking chills that shot from my fingers and toes, culminating to a warm vibration in my core.

“I’m ok. The headache is just down to a dull thud, and I can ignore that, no problem.”

“Did the headache happen because of the episode you had?”

He frowned, like he didn’t want to talk about it.

“It’s the first episode I’ve had in months,” he admitted.

He sounded discouraged.

“But you came out of it so fast,” I reminded him.

He shrugged and shoved a hand through his hair.

That’s when his phone rang.

“Kane,” he answered, still lounging against the pillows like a king.

One eyebrow raised, and he took the phone from his ear to press the speaker button.

“—anyway, I just got off the phone with the funeral director and he set up a slot tomorrow for a quick graveside ceremony.”

“Good,” Ashton grunted.

“Lord, you sound like a caveman,” she teased.

“What do you need from me?” he asked her, ignoring her ribbing.

“For you to show up?”

It sounded more like a question than a statement.

“And to see you in a suit.”

He huffed.
