“What did you think for reals?” I asked him as we took off again.

He shrugged.

“It was fine. It’s an apartment.”

“Do you not want an apartment?”

Another shrug.

“I’d rather not have neighbors over my head, but there’s not a whole lot available for quick move-in.”

“Right. I guess that makes sense.”

“I’m trying to not be picky. Anything is really a step up from the dorms.”

“Yeah. And no roommates.”

“Eh, I didn’t have a roommate on base. Officers usually get private spaces if there are any available.”

Of course he did. I always forgot that he was an officer. It was his soldiers he lost just a few months ago.

We went on to another complex and the same damn thing happened as the manager/receptionist called us a cute couple.

After another bumbling correction from me this time, we went and saw the next apartment. It was pretty similar to the first, so relatively unremarkable. What was remarkable was the third apartment, or rather, the conversation we had once we got inside.

“Sure,” the receptionist said, nodding after Ashton asked to see a one bedroom apartment. “We’ve got one on the top floor so you wouldn’t have any upstairs neighbors.”

“That sounds good,” Ashton agreed. We followed her out and got onto a golf cart out front, which was pretty awesome. We whizzed down the road a little ways, stopping in front of a three story building that housed twelve apartments.

“The clubhouse has a swimming pool and a gym,” the woman said as we went up the two flights of stairs.

I was pretty winded by the time we were done, and I could tell that Ashton was hurting a bit because he was pressing his palm to his hip when we got to the top steps.

“We also have couples’ movie night on Fridays!”

I opened my mouth to deny our fictitious relationship again when Ashton put his arm around me and pulled me into his side with a wink.

“That sounds fun, doesn’t it, hun?”

Butterflies erupted immediately in my belly with that freaking wink.

Hun?

“Oh, yeah, uh huh,” I stumbled.

“Why don’t you go ahead and look around. I’ll wait here for you,” the woman invited, and Ashton pulled me along, glancing at the kitchen as we went toward the bedroom.

“What the hell!” I whisper-yelled at him once we left her earshot.

“Let’s fuck with ‘em.” He laughed. “Maybe they have some kind of family discount or something.”

A blush burst across my cheeks as he dragged me after him, looking around the small place. The bathroom was at the end of the hall, and the bedroom was on the left.

“It’s pretty nice,” Ashton said as we wandered past the woman toward the kitchen, still holding hands.

“Absolutely, it’s a great starter place for a young couple.”

He winked at me again as we looked through the small kitchen and checked it out. To be fair, I wasn’t really watching. My eyes were glued to Ashton as I savored the feeling of his big, masculine hand in mine.
