“I’m here, too,” Ashton said, sticking his head in through the door over the top of mine.

I elbowed him to back off, and he did with a snicker.

“Ash, I thought you were taking another week to recover,” Dad said, standing in a hurry as he rushed out the door, making me stumble back into Ashton.

The man put his hands on my shoulders to steady me, then left them there like I was a shield to be wielded between him and Dad.

“I’ve sat on my ass long enough. I’m good, Tommy Gun. Let me get to work.”

“Well…”

“I’ll keep an eye on him,” I promised, making Dad turn his eyes to me instead of his friend. “No worries.”

“Ok, but don’t strain yourself, Ash.”

I looked over my shoulder and saw the irritation on Ashton’s face. It was the first time he’d been anything but cordial since he’d arrived.

“I’m not a fucking kid, Tom. Would you stop trying to treat me like one?”

Dad sighed, cursing under his breath while Ashton stormed away, likely acquainting himself with the place.

“Don’t let him work too hard,” Dad whispered. “And take off early today so he’ll go home, too.”

“Dad, the guy is a Raider. I’m sure he knows when he’s ok and when he needs rest,” I tried, but Dad shook his head in denial.

“Ash will work himself into the ground before he ever admits to any weakness. That’s why we’ve been so protective. He doesn’t take care of himself the way he should.”

“He’s thirty-something. I’m pretty sure he can take care of himself.”

Dad dismissed me the same way he did Ashton.

“Go keep an eye on him. Let me know how things go.”

I rolled my eyes as I went to go find the man in question.

Honestly, I understood Ashton’s irritation. I would’ve been mad if I got treated like a child when I was a full grown man. Hell I got mad at Mom and Dad for the same thing and I was only twenty-one.

I found Ashton in the break room making himself a coffee.

“You want me to show you the garage, or do you want to find it yourself?”

He took a sip of the steaming hot black sludge and shrugged.

“If you've got a minute, you can show me. Seems like a waste of time for me to putter around until I find it.”

I nodded and waited at the door while he took two more sips with closed eyes, then made his way over.

“Since you already found the break room, I won’t bother with that, but this is the showroom, and you already saw the offices.”

We peeked through a door where our most expensive cars were lined up, then I moved further into the building toward the garage.

“So, who else is working in the garage with me?”

“Kevin and Angelina. They’ve both been here for years, and I think you’ll get along with them pretty well. Angel is hot.”

I wanted to see the reaction on his face with those words, but all he did was snort.

“I’ll be the one to judge that,” he said with a cheeky tone, then he glanced over at me with a wink.
