Kevin is still shooting glares at me while Frank continues to be panic-stricken.

“No chance in hell,” Greg replies as he waves the gun in my face.

He thinks he’s in control, but I know this is my time to act. With the gun in the air, I move quickly and punch him in the gut, causing him to fall over.

Kevin lets go of Avery’s legs making them slam to the ground as Frank struggles to keep her up.

Kevin steps forward to me.

“Lachlan, you can’t have her. What you don’t seem to understand is that she’s my property. She should have stayed in the dark like she was before. But no, it didn’t work out that way, and now she has to die.”

He stalks forward even more, but I hold my ground.

He’s getting closer.

“Fuck you, Kevin,” I swing and hit him clear across the jaw.

He steps back and laughs darkly before drawing his gun from his pocket. Fumbling to keep control of it, he drops it to the ground and lets out a frustrated sigh. In a matter of moments, he’s lunging for me next instead of picking up the gun. In a desperate attempt, he tries to tackle me to the ground.

My build is bigger than his, and he can’t manage to take me down on his own. We’re in a scuffle I’m desperately trying to end when I hear sirens.

A woman’s voice shouts in the distance, “Down here!”

Kevin quickly pulls himself off me and darts for the SUV door. I get up fast and head in the same direction.

“You can’t fucking have her,” he shouts to the sky like an enraged monster.

Greg is in the driver’s seat with the engine running.

“Kevin, get the fuck in the car, and leave her. She’s not part of the plan.”

I pull Avery from Frank’s arms and see fumes practically coming off Kevin. He has to decide now. Come to where Frank and I are, or hop into the SUV and have a chance of escaping.

“Fuck,” he screams.

Frank has turned away from me and is running down the alley away from the building.

I can’t let Kevin get away with this.

It feels like time has slowed down as I pull my cell phone out of my jacket pocket and throw it right at the back of Kevin’s head as he attempts to get into the vehicle.

It strikes him directly, causing him to stumble backward. He loses his footing and begins falling to the ground. Kevin’s head hits the asphalt hard, leaving him unconscious.

The police are screaming at us from a distance in the alley. Slowly, the voices get closer until they’re right next to the three of us.

I sink to the ground with Avery in my arms, and she falls into my lap. My past that I’d been running from and my new reality are now overlapping.

I look down at Avery.

I’m back on the side of a road with a woman I care deeply for dying next to me. Avery can’t have the same fate as Jenny. I won’t fucking stand for that.

“I need an ambulance!” I scream to no one in particular.

Tears are welling up in my eyes as my surroundings continue to be a blur.

Greg attempts to take off in the vehicle with the backdoor open.

The police begin firing immediately. He speeds up, but the bullets flying at the car cause him to lose control of it.
