Letting my head fall forward, I say a silent prayer. One that allows me to hang onto a thread of hope that everything is going to be okay. It’s almost two in the morning, and I haven’t heard anything in hours.

After we arrived and Avery was taken back, I called her attorney Noah to update him on the situation. There is no doubt in my mind that one of the attorneys at his office is still hard at work for Avery right now. Dealing with police and Kevin’s attorney.

Now, I’m grateful that Avery found someone who wasn’t just a divorce attorney. Someone who knew that his practice should have legal experts in every area. For an attorney, you would think his practice handles mob cases or politicians. I don’t fucking know, but he just has connections that even surprise me.

Getting up to stretch my legs, I see Grayson coming through the automatic doors.

“Hey, man, how are you holding up?” he asks, patting my shoulder.

“Still waiting, but a few hours ago, her doctor said they were taking her into surgery. I thought I would have heard back by now.”

I have no concept of how long this will take but fuck, over five hours? It’s insanity.

We walk back to the lobby seating area I was sitting in before.

“She’ll pull through,” he reassures me.

“I know, it’s just taking too fucking long.”

I sigh loudly and sweep my hand through my hair. We sit in a comfortable, reassuring silence for some time.

“You know this is all over the news, right?”

Fuck. I wondered.

“I assumed it would be, but I haven’t seen any reporters through those windows yet…”

“I’m surprised by that too. I bet there will be in the morning. You better figure out a plan to leave.”

“I’ll call Avery’s attorney in the morning again; he’ll have a plan for us,” I reply, trying to stay calm.

Noah will be able to get us out without being seen.

Avery’s new shift doctor emerges from the corridor and greets me.

“Lachlan? Avery’s fiancé, correct?”

When I got to the hospital, I had to change my tune to the doctors. They really wouldn’t let me in as just a boyfriend, and I couldn’t intimidate them into not questioning my role in her life.

I sure as fuck won’t be wasting any time making her officially my fiancée once she gets out of here.

“Yes, that’s me.”

Grayson waits in his seat as I walk closer to the doctor.

“Well, I have great news. Ms. Matheson is awake. You can go to see her now,” he informs me.

I want to wince at the reference to her old last name. Since she isn’t officially divorced, it’s still the one on her license. At least he didn’t refer to her as Mrs. Matheson.

“Thank you, doctor,” I reply before shaking his hand.

Grayson stands, clearly understanding that it’s good news. He walks over to me and pulls me into a hug momentarily.

“I’m going to head out. I’ll be back in the morning. Go get your girl.”

He doesn’t have to tell me twice. I head up to room 402, where Avery is waiting for me.

I open the door to her hospital room quietly in case she’s fallen back asleep. Sitting up tall, watching the door, is Avery, my Goldie girl. She really is okay.
