“Father Lachlan, wonderful Mass today.”

“Thank you. It’s a pleasure to have you here this morning. I was hoping to see you.”

She lets a small smile reappear.

“Do you have time today to work with me on a few gala details? I’m afraid my talents do not lie with design, and it can’t wait until tomorrow. Patricia and the team won’t be happy to know I didn’t finish them over the weekend,” I say while laughing at the notion.

They are actually really fucking scary when I miss a deadline. I swear Patricia must have been an army general before coming to St. Peter’s.

I have to keep Avery here with me. It’s been days since I went to her house.

“Of course, not a problem. I’ll wait outside the parish office?”

Avery gestures to where the office building is, and I nod in agreement.

“I’ll be there soon.”

Avery walks away, and I can’t help but watch her go. The way her body sways draws me in. She turns back slightly and catches me staring at her; who fucking cares at this point. We both know we have a slight problem.

As I watch Avery disappear, Missy Jenkins comes up to me.

I fucking hate dealing with these women. Women like Missy never have been my type, even when I was fucking almost anything with tits and a pussy.

“Father Lachlan, I couldn’t help but overhear. If you need help with the gala, you should have asked me,” she purrs before continuing.

She’s eye fucking me without shame or a care in the world in front of the few remaining parishioners who are talking nearby.

“I own an interior design firm that handles so many of our congregation members’ office and home designs, including Avery’s own house. Her husband hasn’t trusted her with a redesign because of how beautiful my work is,” she muses.

Missy’s trying to put Avery down. I don’t like this one fucking bit. Who cares if any of that is true? I won’t let her talk about Avery like this. Not to me.

“Thank you, Mrs. Jenkins, for your concern. I fully trust Avery’s taste and decision-making capabilities. I put my full faith in her regardless of that of her husband’s.”

Missy’s mouth drops open as she gapes at my words. She wasn’t expecting me to be so sure of Avery and, most likely, wasn’t expecting for me to say what I did about her husband.

Fuck that prick. For fucking sure, he’s a pair of balls.

“Well…” she stammers, unsure of what to say.

“Good day, Father Lachlan,” she finishes snippily.

She flees faster than I thought she would. Off to talk to Elaine Johnson, her sidekick, I’m sure.

I watch her walk down the church steps and… yep, right to Elaine. Missy is something else. They’re whispering to each other right now about what I said and no doubt about me staring at Avery as she walked away. Making it as apparent as can be by peeking out from behind their hand-blocked faces in my direction.

I need to shake that off and make my way to the office where Avery’s waiting.

“Whoa there,” I say to someone who almost runs right into me.

I brace the person’s shoulders gently so they really don’t knock into me. That’s when I realize it’s Avery. She’s staring up at me with those same doe eyes I’ve seen before. Only this time, she’s looking at me like I’m her savior.

I like this look more than I should be admitting. I want her like this all the time. Looking at me like I’m the only person who she needs.

“Avery,” I say softly.

She shivers at my voice. Her body is so responsive to me.

“No one has stood up for me in a very long time,” she whispers.
