LocalsOnly843!

Yes, locals only; tourists get out of our fine city that brings year-round revenue. What a mindset.

Bingo! I’m in.

I’ll start with what he’s saved locally on his computer and not just on the cloud. I’m seeing way too many files. There’s so much here that I don’t really know where I should be looking.

As I click around, nothing seems unusual; most file names ring a bell from past discussions about his work. As his wife, I had to have some understanding of what he did at the functions I was expected to attend by his side.

There is one that I don’t recognize. I open up a folder called “True Innings Corporation.”

Holy fuck. What the fuck is this?

It’s me. A headshot of mine is staring right back at me. One that he easily could have downloaded from one of the handful of charities’ websites that I’m a member of the board.

Why am I in this folder?

I click on another file, followed by several more, until I stop in my tracks. All of the blood has to be draining from my face because I cannot believe what I’m looking at.

I, Avery Matheson, am the alleged CEO of this company. My signature is right there.

But I don’t remember signing this… oh no. My face pales even more as I realize what has happened.

Several months ago, Kevin told me he was setting up new investments for us and just needed a “quick sign” on a few pieces of paperwork. It had to have been then.

Traditionally our business manager would be the one requesting anything new for us that required my signature. Although I was unhappy at the time, I didn’t realize we were here. In this dark place of no return. It’s almost enough to question if I’m also to blame for how we got here. But fortunately, I know the truth.

Kevin is good at pretending in order to get his way. That includes placating his naïve wife, showing off family memories to clients who come into his office, and planting false truths wherever he goes.

True love doesn’t fuck someone else on your rug. It doesn’t steal money from your bank account. Being in love with someone means you do not convince them to sign paperwork to help you with your schemes.

He got me to be the CEO of this company. I don’t know why he did this. What I do know is he doesn’t care if I’m collateral damage left in his wake.

I can’t let him ruin the rest of my life.

Quickly, I print out everything in this computer file as evidence to take to my attorney. I put my findings in my purse with shaky hands and take a final look around his office.

A truth of mine has finally been set free.

Fuck Kevin Matheson. Avery Parker is back.

Chapter 14

Blessed is the man who perseveres in temptation, for when he has been proved he will receive the crown of life that he promised those who love him.

James 1:12

Back in the house I share with Kevin, I know I have to make a choice. Do I still leave like I planned, or should I stick around and buy more time to look into all of his activities without suspicion? Doing the latter is potentially the smarter option, but I just can’t take one more night in my prison. The chance that Kevin could come home any night and get in bed with me makes my stomach churn.

Pretending as if we aren’t living a lie.

The information I’ve been gathering is enough. I can take it all confidently to my attorney and have him look into it. If I use this new fake company as an excuse, I fear I might keep finding reasons to stay trapped in my loveless marriage.

I, Avery Parker, am no longer afraid of this truth.

It's time to face it. I have to leave Kevin so I don’t lose myself any more than I already have.

I paid movers to pack up only what was mine in the bedroom; clothes, shoes, purses, even some of my favorite jewelry, and move it to the new apartment I’m now renting.
