He brings our hands to his mouth and gives mine a gentle kiss.

“Good, the rest we’ll figure out together. Day by day.”

We spend the next couple of hours talking with each other about our lives, drinking champagne and whiskey, and taking a few bites of the charcuterie board spread.

“Okay, next question,” I say with a laugh.

Lachlan and I are leaning against the foot of the couch now.

“Oh no, Avery, there is no way I’m letting you just slip past this one,” Lachlan teases.

“There is no slipping past anything; I simply said what I said, and now we can move on,” I giggle.

Leaning forward I pull a grape from the bunch resting on the board.

“Is that so?” he asks with an eyebrow raised and a smirk in place.

“Yes, it’s just a matter of fact,” I retort before popping the grape in my mouth to try to conceal my laughter.

“So what you are trying to say is that it is perfectly acceptable to have never tried eating apples in your entire…” he trails off, teasing me.

“Twenty-eight years of existence? And no allergy. You do realize that the apple is speculated to be the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. I can’t let you not try one now that we have this happening,” he laughs while gesturing back and forth between us.

“Are you implying you’re the forbidden fruit, Father Lachlan? Should I just take a bite out of you?” I manage to say through a fit of giggles.

“Don’t tempt your priest any more than you already have,” he says with a wink.

Lachlan dashes into the kitchen.

“I know what you’re up to in there. Not trying it!” I shout out loudly.

I hear shuffling in the direction he headed. Slowly, I turn my body around to face that area.

“Just one bite, Goldie girl.” He laughs from the kitchen.

My body shakes from laughter.

The more we share the more I know what he said is right. No matter how wrong or forbidden this is—Lachlan feels like coming home.

I’m in like with my priest. The priest of a religion I don’t belong to. One that I don’t agree with. The truth of the matter is that I can’t look at Lachlan like he’s just my priest any longer. He is the man who is slowly sinking into every part of me.

“Okay, fine,” I relent with a roll of my eyes while trying to hide my smile.

Lachlan appears from the kitchen area with two different kinds of apples. I couldn’t tell you what kind they are.

“I’ll go with the green one,” I say as I reach my hand out for it.

Lachlan stalks closer to where I’m sitting and tosses it in the air before catching it.

Finally, back to where I’m sitting on the floor, Lachlan takes a seat next to me. Turning to face where he is now, I pull my hand back to me, waiting for what he’s about to do.

He smirks before taking a bite of the green apple.

“Delicious,” he says with a grin.

Am I getting jealous of a fruit right now? I want to be the only thing Lachlan thinks is delicious.

“I’ll try some,” I respond coyly.
