Avery finally reaches me, and I can’t contain my low sigh of relief. She’s here.

“Good Morning, Father Lachlan. Beautiful Mass today.” Avery smiles up at me.

Kevin finally catches up to where we are and grabs her by the elbow. Fucking not on my watch. I have to de-escalate the situation.

“Mr. Matheson, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I haven’t seen you here since I started,” I greet him.

Kevin looks disheveled as he processes that I’m speaking to him now.

“Oh right, yes. Pleasure to meet you, as well. My wife and I must be on our way now. We have a very important lunch to attend,” he sneers through a fake smile before glaring at Avery.

Not a fucking chance in hell, buddy boy.

I turn to Avery.

“Mrs. Matheson, today is the final day we have to work on the gala details. It’s really crucial to have you join me. It’s for the church, after all.”

She smiles brightly at me. “Yes, that’s right. Of course, I wouldn’t do that to the church.”

She turns to face Kevin head-on.

“If you have anything to say to me, please speak to my attorney. You’ll be getting his contact information tomorrow after he files.”

She turns back to me, “Father, can we go, please?”

Kevin’s mouth is hanging open. He pulls himself back together quickly.

“This isn’t over, Avery, sweetheart,” he says before spinning on his heels and walking down the steps to finally disappear.

Avery and I lock eyes right as we both hear a gasp.

Turning to see Missy and Elaine. Standing so close to what just happened, enough to hear what Avery just said.

“Mrs. Matheson, let’s go to my office,” I say with a tilt of my head in the direction of it.

We walk away knowing that this is just the beginning of our problems with Kevin. In order to help her, I need to know the details. I can’t remain in the dark any longer.

Our days are just beginning together, but we need to start dusting off the cobwebs from Avery’s former life with Kevin.

Chapter 17

For God did not give us spirit of cowardice bet rather of power and love and self-control.

2 Timothy 1:7

I knew that Lachlan would eventually want to know more about my impending divorce from Kevin. I just wanted to have a chance to enjoy our time together, even if it was only for one night, without this negativity entering our space.

Truth is, I shouldn’t have gone to church today. It was a mistake I should have anticipated since Kevin hadn’t reached out to me. It was two days since I left my note.

I wonder about the fury that went through him as he came to terms with the fact that I knew the truth and left.

His precious toy walked away.

The past seventy-two hours have gone by in a blur. I wanted it to slow down, but I couldn’t be naïve.

My attorney would be filing the paperwork tomorrow morning, and then Kevin would be getting served. It was all in motion.

Part of me had hoped that Kevin would scoff at my note and not care. He has his shiny, new fucktoy to play with; he doesn’t need the tarnished one he’s kept locked away in a gilded cage.
