“I don’t need a pause on us. That’s not what I mean. You’ve done more for me than you could ever know. I feel like I’ve known you for a lifetime. I just need time to think. I want you, but this is all so hectic. I have to figure out some things in my head.”

“I understand, and I’m here. Always. I’m here for you, Avery. Just remember that.”

“I will.”

Kevin showing up at church has taken a toll on me emotionally and physically. I’m just drained. As much as I would like to say I’ve held it together, I think seeing him today just made me realize how much I’ve been dealing with and how much more is to come.

Life with Kevin was not right for me, regardless of the cheating. I need more out of a partner, and I’ve found that in Lachlan. I want to be seen, heard, and wanted, and Lachlan gives me all of that and more. It’s just bad timing. The worst if I’m being honest.

I’m a terrible person for putting Lachlan in a position to break his vows. I know he said that he wants me, but how can I let him do this?

Everything between us is moving too fast. Love may move at warp speed, but I can’t make another big mistake when it comes to my life. I have to figure out a balance between wanting him and facing the truth.

Lachlan is a priest.

When we’re together, it’s hard to remember that fact. We might both enjoy the kinkiness of it when we’re together sexually, but it’s not really role-play when that’s what his job is. He really is forbidden and off-limits.

But when I’m with him, all I care about are his emerald-green eyes being focused on me and his caring words penetrating my soul.

“Avery, I have good news. You have officially filed for divorce from Kevin,” my attorney, Noah, tells me on the phone.

“That’s great. I’m really surprised he didn’t manage to file this morning before we did.”

“He didn’t make it on time. I was surprised as well not to have more of a situation on our hands,” he shares.

“Do you think I’ll have to wait a full year before I’m officially divorced?”

Settling on my living room couch, I turn on the gas fireplace as I wait for his response.

“No, despite the rules of South Carolina law, I think we should be in a good place to have this expedited. That’s on me to handle.”

“I have more to share,” I say with a sigh.

“What happened?”

“Yesterday, Kevin came to the church I go to and tried to talk to me; he knew I’d be there. It wasn’t necessarily a scene, but he’d been quiet up until then, so I thought maybe he just wouldn’t care enough.”

“You need to get a restraining order against him to protect yourself. He’s radio silent and then shows up where he knows you’ll be and can’t make a scene? It’s already feeling unsafe to me.”

“Why? He’s not really dangerous per se…” I trail off.

“Avery, I understand, but right now, he’s taunting you. I know you may not see it that way, but it could be a good option in your case.”

I never thought I’d be in this position. Twenty-eight years old and getting divorced.

A restraining order would just make things messier between us. I still have hope that after the rage settles, he will let me move on. At the very least not harass me again. I’m not asking for any money, the house, or anything at all.

“Let’s hold off for now. I promise I’ll let you know if anything else happens. I don’t think we’re there yet.”

He doesn’t seem happy with this, but I am the client.

“Okay, but please let us know if anything does happen, and remember you have to stay vigilant. This may seem like a small incident, but usually, these types of men escalate their activities to get the reactions they're looking for.”

“I will, but… there’s more.”

I share with him the company paperwork I found in Kevin’s office. Noah is alarmed, to say the least. He promises me he’ll put a member of his team on it.

I’m grateful I found someone this renowned in the community before Kevin had a chance to ruin my chances of working with Noah. I am paying him a hefty fee to take care of all this. I trust he can figure it out before something happens to me. I want a clean break. Thankfully, I am in a financial position to do that.
