When Lachlan arrives at Jackson’s, he takes a sip of the whiskey I ordered him ahead of his arrival.

“What happened with Missy today? Looked like another confrontation.”

I take a sip of my glass of champagne, letting out a long sigh.

I explain that Kevin was there and that getting Missy on his side is clearly a tactical move. I go into how I saw Missy earlier in the week and couldn’t figure out their connection outside of me and some meeting they were having.

“Fuck. I think I have an idea what that’s about.”

“What do you mean?” How could he have any inclination about what’s going on between them?

“I meant to tell you this sooner, but it’s been so chaotic lately. Father Greg brought me into his office the other week. He told me Kevin is somehow involved in the expansion campaign. Apparently, Kevin has been coming by the parish office too.”

He takes a sip of his whiskey before continuing.

“He told me specifically not to tell you. I thought it was odd at that time since you were his wife. He said no one could know about his association with the church expansion effort.”

“Do you remember why?”

Lachlan takes a moment to ponder what it was.

“I didn’t ask further; it felt very off, and I didn’t want this to be something that could be used against you.”

“I wonder if…” I trail off.

“Wonder what?”

“I found documentation that Kevin started up a company and named me the CEO of it. He had me sign paperwork a while back, but at the time, I didn’t think anything of it. My attorney’s looking into it for me. I wonder if it has anything to do with that. I could be reaching, but it all tracks.”

“Fuck.”

Fuck, indeed.

Lachlan starts to stroke my back to calm me.

“What do you think Missy knows?” I ask out loud.

“It could be as little as just him helping with the church’s expansion campaign, or she could be more involved… if there is more. Who knows? Either way, she wouldn’t question Kevin regardless.”

That’s true. Missy would play her hand to her advantage.

“I have to tell my attorney. It’s definitely related to what I’ve already been discovering.”

“Baby, I’ll be here every step of the way. I promise.”

“Thank you, Lachlan. Your support means everything to me.”

Lachlan kisses me. His soft lips press against mine, and my body melts at the touch. Softly, he pulls back. His eyes are a deep emerald green that are sparkling in the light.

Those three words are at the tip of my tongue.

Proverbs 23:12

The next day, I have plans to meet with Grayson. Since meeting Avery, I haven’t been catching up with him as frequently as we both hoped when I moved to Charleston. We made time to see each other periodically, but most of our plans fell through because of how busy we both were. I need to let him know what’s happening. How I’m leaving the church.
