“That’s wild,” says Paxton. “Satellites can’t even find it?”

“Good point.” Tammy leans on the table, a half-eaten cupcake in her hand. “How can an entire continent hide from all the electronics in space? Or all the Airplanes going overhead? No way the ancient magical creatures could have predicted humans would develop all this technology.”

Maple polishes off her third cupcake, then licks her hands. No idea how she does it. The cupcakes are almost as big as she is. “Magic doesn’t care about technology. The more complicated it is, the easier it is for magic to fool it.”

“So, only a magical creature can see it.”

“Exactly, but only a creature from there can see it.”

Eyebrows raised, Tammy looks at me. “How on earth do we transport a unicorn into the middle of the ocean?”

“Probably gonna have to rule out teleportation, then,” says Anthony as he walks in from the back hall.

I do a double take at my son seeming to appear out of nowhere. “Where have you been?”

“Helping a neighbor with a small problem.” Ant pulls a chair out and joins the tea party.

“So nice of you.” Tammy grins at him.

“Anything worth mentioning?” I ask.

“Shadow creature got stuck on a giant dreamcatcher in their backyard… started ripping the place up.” Anthony plucks a cupcake from the tray.

“Makes sense.” Maple nods while eyeing another cake. In a few seconds, she decides against eating it and sighs. “The shadow beings are basically nightmares more than real… at least now. They want to force their way into the world.”

Anthony leans back in his chair. “If you can’t find any photos of this place, I suppose the next best thing would be to teleport to Hawaii and try to hire a boat.”

Maple shakes her head. “Teleporting doesn’t work on unicorns. The magic will go crazy. Everyone gets hurt, including the unicorn.”

“Weird. I never thought of teleporting as being magical,” says Paxton.

Tammy tilts her head. “If not magic, what then?”

Paxton stares into space, lost for words.

Come to think of it, so am I.

“Umm…” Paxton scrunches her nose. “Vampire stuff.”

“They call that magic,” fake-whispers Tammy.

“What are we supposed to do then if teleporting isn’t feasible here?” I ask.

“Sounds like we’re going on a boat,” says Ant, grinning. “And going the long way.”

I seriously don’t know what to make of his words. The long way would mean boarding a boat relatively nearby and heading out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This can’t be happening.

Maple zips over into Paxton’s face. “If boat, you need to go to protect the unicorn.”

“I… what?” Paxton fidgets. “I don’t have super powers like everyone else.”

“You’re an empath, kiddo.” Tammy winks.

“Ugh. I know.” Paxton slouches. “That just means I know exactly how evil the bad guys are when they’re kicking my butt.”

Maple sits on Pax’s shoulder. “Your presence shields the unicorn from the shadow beings, remember? If you aren’t close to it, they will have a much easier time finding her.”

“Pretty sure we don’t want those dark goblin things finding us on a boat in the middle of the ocean,” says Ant.
