“He can’t!” Maple keeps zapping hood goblins. “It’s gotta be dispelled.”

“So, dispel it!”

She continues hurling tiny energy bolt after tiny energy bolt, pausing for half a second to give me this ‘and when the hell am I supposed to do that’ stare before going back to shooting goblins.

“They’re trying to unhook the hitch!” yells Tammy.

“Don’t just sit there!” Paxton shoves at Anthony. “Do something!”

“I am.” He pats her on the head.

Paxton stares, unsure if he’s being a smartass or serious.

Flickers of green light come from behind. I can’t really tell what’s going on since I’m trying to keep us in our lane. Steering this beast with a trailer isn’t exactly easy to do from the passenger seat. Worse, Kingsley’s foot is getting heavy. We’re almost doing seventy now and gradually accelerating. I can’t even set the cruise control since stepping on the gas overrides it.

More flashes of blue light come from inside the trailer.

“Mom!” shouts Paxton. “They’re in the trailer, attacking her! I need to go back there!”

“The unicorn’s got it handled,” calls Tammy. “Do not climb out the window.”

Paxton emits an uneasy whine. She’s so frustrated, wanting to help, but there’s nothing more she can do here. The army of goblins finally stops clambering up over the front edge of the hood.

Maple zaps the last one, then waves her hand rapidly as if she burned herself. “Whew. Too many,” she chirps.

Anthony reaches over the seat and pokes Kingsley in the shoulder.

The big guy jumps and babbles, acting like someone who just caught themselves nodding off behind the wheel. “Crap…” He eases off the gas. “Sorry…”

I let him take the wheel back and shove myself into my seat. “You didn’t pass out. One of those things smacked into you.”

“Just blacked out,” he mutters. “That’s never happened before.”

“Have you ever taken a shadow goblin to the face at sixty miles per hour before?” I ask.

He gives me a sideways glance. “No, obviously.”

“Why did you wait so long to fix him?” asks Paxton.

“Because I was holding the hitch in place.” Anthony twists around to look out the back window.

I blink at him. “You what? What kind of magic is that?”

“Call it guardian angel magic.” He winks. “Luckily, these things are clueless about technology. It would’ve been harder if they knew how to work a hitch.”

Tammy pulls herself back through the window into the cab. “Whew.”

“What happened back there?” I ask.

“Five or six of them were on the hitch trying to open it.” She holds up a finger gun. “Nothing a few bolts couldn’t handle.”

“Are we clear, then?” asks Kingsley.

Paxton gazes around. “I think so. Don’t sense any more evil.”

“Good. Stay alert.” I shift sideways in the seat, facing Kingsley, so I can watch front and back. “They’re definitely going to try again.”
