With a furious growl, the wolf slammed into the carriage, knocking it over, crushing guards under it.

The screams of my maids were weak compared to the harsh tearing of wood as the wolf sunk his jaws into the frame. One bite was all it took to rip it open.

We lined the carriage with silver in an attempt to stop any beasts that dwelled in the Black Forest from harming us. All of our weapons were tipped with silver, silver hung on our bodies and in our pockets. The only gun pellets we brought were silver.

It had to work.

I readied my sword, sucking in a breath. My hand tremored, and I hissed at myself for my weakness. If the silver did not work like the tales said, I could not see how we would survive.

The terrified heartbeats that hung around me were vanishing. Half of us dead already.

Panic exploded within me as I ran for the carriage. The cost of my life far outweighed any in the party. But one of the few women I considered a friend was in that carriage. I thought she would be safe under the layers of wood and silver.

I was wrong.

More guards rushed to defend my maids. Another growl pierced the night. More gunshots, more screams, and one strong heartbeat silenced as my guards killed a wolf at the back of the party.

The awesome strength of the wolves overwhelmed me, my shaking hand clutching my stomach, my breaths heavy and deep. I was too far away. I could only run towards them as more high screams ripped from the women within, the grey wolf answering with a terrible snarl that cracked through my body.

Would he taste their human blood and know it was not mine? Though my mother was a pureblooded vampire of the Cardinal Kingdom, my father was a second son of the Indigo Empire, tainting our line with that of the dark fae.

I was metres from the carriage when a gunman fired his weapon from behind me. The sound pierced my ears, deafening me. All that remained was a high ringing. Pain shot through my body, my vision blurred. A silver pellet sliced through my upper arm. I cried out in shock, my senses blown, and I reacted on instinct as my fangs extended. My weak gaze landed on the slumped form of the grey wolf, and I prepared to attack.

He snarled, pushing himself up on thick paws, teeth snapping as he lunged down at my maids, who had swords and daggers for protection. I just did not know how useful they would be.

My sight cleared, though the darkness still weighed heavy as I jumped for the wolf, lifting my sword, the silver-pointed tip aimed directly downwards. One firm push against the soft mud and I barely reached the carriage.

I kicked off the wheel, sending myself higher. I snarled as he turned his head, baring my fangs the moment my sword pierced his neck and sank deep into his flesh.

My body was a shadow compared to his, not even the width of his torso. I clenched my jaw, my feet pressed into his spine as I harshly twisted the blade. His body jerked. Once. Twice. His heart beat for the last time.

A howl ripped through the mist around the carriage as the wolf died beneath me.

I had a second to react as the blonde wolf hurled itself at me from my right. Dropping low, I buried my fingers into grey fur, warm blood staining my skin.

The blond wolf sailed over me. I only just missed the furious snap of his jaws. His feet sunk into the mud, twisting quickly to face me as I jumped down from the carriage. His rage pulsed through me, devastating me with one look.

I could not hear the heartbeats of my maids. My senses muted from the gunshot, but clear enough that I could see the blond wolf. I raised my sword, challenging him.

Pain bit through my arm as the wolf sniffed deeply. His lips stretched back across his fangs, his bright yellow gaze boring into me.

He did not give me a chance, and neither did I for him. He leapt for me, and I made to jump away, but the deep mud held me down. I gasped in shock, eyes wide, certain of my death.

But I was saved.

A red dress, flowing wheat hair, and pale skin in the mist.

My maid threw herself forward, silently sacrificing herself as the wolf sunk his teeth into her shoulder. They flew past me, my maid’s dress stark against the wolf’s blond fur. My body twisted. Horror drenched me as he easily crunched through her neck. She was dead before I could blink.

“Surround the wolf!” Jasper raced to join the band of guards closest to us. But his focus was split between the wolf and myself.

I thought we had a chance. I really believed that fifty trained guards would be enough to defend us when the wolves attacked.

I was a fool. An arrogant fool.

Chest heaving, stomach rolling, I watched in numb shock as the blond wolf lifted its head. The blood of my friend dripped from his fangs. He turned, his focus on me as I wrenched my feet from the mud.

Soldiers ran in around him, all sounds distant from the high ringing in my ears.
