“Yes,” I said.

Maguire shrugged. “If that’s what Eleri wants?”

“Well, maybe if I have power over them,” she said, “I’m the only thing that can stop them from hurting each other.”

“WHY CAN’T WE stop here?” I said to Jeffers.

“I’m supposed to stop elsewhere,” he said, then winced, because he probably realized he wasn’t meant to announce that to me.

“What? Eleri told you?” I said.

He sighed. “Look, there’s a big scheme to pretend there’s car trouble if you two aren’t working things out. But she didn’t indicate you’d be back there beating each other up.”

“Stop here,” said Sinclair, staring out the window.

“We’re still in the city limits,” said Jeffers.

“Stop here,” said Sinclair, putting an alpha directive behind it.

Jeffers winced again. But he pulled the car over, and Sinclair climbed over me—since my side of the car was next to the sidewalk—to get out.

I followed him out onto the sidewalk.

“Where are you guys going?” said Jeffers.

Sinclair pointed. “That way. There’s a club we both know about.”

I furrowed my brow, trying to get my bearings. “What club?”

Sinclair glanced at me over his shoulder. “Neon Inferno.”

I lifted my chin, remembering that place. He’d taken me there before, years ago, when we were much younger. It was a rough and tumble kind of bar. Fights did break out there sometimes, and the prevailing attitude was to throw them out into the back alley rather than call the authorities. “All right,” I said.

“All right,” he said.

Jeffers groaned under his breath.

Sinclair started off without me.

I hurried to catch up to him.

He glanced at me sidelong as I fell into step with him. “You don’t mind if we get recognized and are splashed all over the gossip sites tomorrow?”

“Are we really going to start a bar fight?” I said.

“You said we needed to settle this,” he said. “One of us is going to submit, right?”

“You can’t make me submit,” I said.

He laughed, and it wasn’t a nice laugh.

I took him by the shoulder and turned him to look at me. “You can’t—”

“I’m a fucking alpha, aren’t I?” He shook me off. “You could stand to submit, maybe, Devlin. You don’t know what you’re missing.”
