“Very good, sir,” I said, my voice barely audible.

They opened the door to her room, and I followed them inside. I shut the door behind all three of us.

He was touching her.

She was looking at me with wide, curious eyes. I could smell her, too, and she smelled strange and familiar, like I’d met her before, or like I’d always been waiting to meet her. I was freaking out, and I knew I couldn’t do anything about it because I was on duty here, for the rest of the night, and I probably wouldn’t get a chance to go home until they were turned over to the public relations folks tomorrow bright and early.

So, there was nothing for this weirdass knot of mine, and I was just going to have to rise above it. I could do that. I had once dragged another soldier half a mile while I was bleeding from a deep wound in my side. But that had been different. I swear I couldn’t even feel it. I got him to the medic, and then I collapsed, and all of that was like I was in a different place in my head, like I was functioning on sheer instinct.

Now, my instinct was telling me to fuck the omega, which…

Holy shit, this was worse than anything I’d ever imagined. I needed to get myself off this assignment, but how to do that without also ruining my job here and my reputation as a reliable worker in the process?

How could I possibly be an alpha?

That was insanity.

“It’s probably best if we have a night away from each other anyway,” Devlin was saying to her, touching her face, looking deep into her eyes. “We’re both exhausted. We need to be up early.”

“Yes, it’s all a whirlwind,” she said. “But I don’t want you to leave me. Of course, they didn’t let me pack anything, but I guess this place is probably stocked with, uh, things.”

“Things?” said the prince.

“Protection,” she said. “Condoms and… things.” She blushed. “I know that suppressant is birth control, and you have an injection, but we need to worry about—”

“We don’t,” said Devlin, shaking his head. “Some quirk of designations, a genetic mutation or something, they think. No one who presents ever gets STDs.”

Eleri’s eyebrows shot up.

Devlin laughed. “Yes, I realize that sounds ludicrous, but that was discovered before the palace’s current position on scientific studies on people with designations.”

“It’s true,” I spoke up. “I remember reading about that.” If I had a knot, did that mean it would happen to me, too?

“Really,” she said, considering it.

“Trust me, it’s one advantage in a sea of utter disadvantage,” said Devlin. “But you’re fines to do as you please with whoever, no worries on that score.”

“Whoever I…?” She shot a glance over his shoulder at me and then sharply turned back to Devlin. “I… we have this fated-bond-mate thing, don’t we?”

“It seems that we do.” He smiled indulgently. “We have a lifetime together. Maybe it’s best if we savor it a little, take our time getting close to each other.”

“So, I shouldn’t feel…”

“What?” he said.

She twisted her fingers together. “The Queen, she has… more than one alpha.”

“Oh,” said the prince, pulling back.

“But with this, what we have, the bond-thing? It would just be us?”

He licked his lips. “Well, we can talk about all that later, I suppose.”

She shifted on her feet. “You’re in some kind of relationship already. With Prince Rohan?”

“No,” said Devlin, too quickly. “That’s not a relationship.”

“Oh.”
