“You’re very welcome, omega,” he murmured. “Now, you’ll help your alpha come again.”

“Of course,” I breathed.

“I want to pretend I’m fucking my pussy, I think,” he said. “So—” Then, he cut off. “Wait, sorry, Eleri,” he said in a normal voice. “Hold on.”

Hold on?

Was he just breaking off in the middle of phone sex, before he got off? Of course, how many fucking orgasms had he had?

He came back on the line. “Hey, someone’s here. I have to go.”

“Who?” I said.

“It’s Rohan, actually,” he said.

I shifted on the bed, the covers falling away from my nakedness. “Rohan?”

“Yeah, look, he and I, we usually talk every day, see each other every day. I haven’t seen him today or talked to him. He’s worried. I need to talk to him now. He’s my best friend.”

Best friend that you also have sex with. I did not want him to hang up, but I felt as if I couldn’t stop him. I was jealous as all fuck of Rohan. I dug my fingers into the phone.

“I’ll text you before I go to bed, hmm? I miss you already.” His voice was liquid again, soothing and deep and becoming familiar in a way that frightened me, because it was too soon to feel that connected to him. All of this was too soon.

Tell him not to hang up.

“Bye, sweetling.”

I JIGGLED THE doorknob of Devlin’s bedroom again. I was outside in his antechamber, the sitting room portion of his rooms. This wasn’t normal behavior for him, locking me out of anywhere.

But then, I would have said we were best friends.

I would have said, if he knotted for an omega, he’d at least have texted me. Hell, I would have expected, by now, a phone call, the two of us celebrating together.

So, anyway, things were confusing.

The door opened and Devlin was there, smelling of sex and some other, sweeter scent—shit, that was his omega? Fuck, she smelled good. His cock was zipped into his pants, straining against them. He was buttoning a shirt over his chest. “You got some timing, man. I should have just told you to come back later.”

I stood in the doorway, oddly off-kilter.

He turned to look at me, eyebrows raised. “What?”

It came out angry. “I find this out from the media announcement?”

He bowed his head, running his hand over the back of his neck. He was fucking gorgeous.

Here was the thing about me and Devlin Byrne. I was in love with him and had been in love with him from the minute my knot swelled for him. And he was very interested in keeping me at arms’ length. We’d been as close as two people could possibly be. We’d each had each other’s knots buried inside each other’s asses, and yet, Devlin had always insisted on putting an emotional barrier between the two of us.

I used to blame Sinclair for it.

Devlin never talked much about it, but it didn’t take much to put together that Sinclair had broken his heart. So, now, Devlin had walls up.

I knew all of that, and I was so far gone for the guy that I let it slide because I wanted him that badly. I would take what I could get from him. A little was better than none. Even if it hurt.

This… whatever this was… this didn’t feel good either.

“Hey,” he said, lifting his head. “I’m sorry. It all went so fast. You have no idea how fast it went. She was all I could think about, and then we went to her parents’ place, and then I had to work on getting things prepared for her here, and the Queen wanted to talk, and then… we’re not allowed to fuck, and…” He glanced at me, saw my expression, and lowered his head again.
