“Ma’am, I’m here to look after you, not the other way around.”

“Eleri,” I said.

“Eleri,” he said, his voice going soft and almost worshipful as he gazed at me. He let me walk him over to a chair and he sat down. “You’re the most beautiful woman in the world, do you know that?”

I giggled. “I am not.”

He looked away, embarrassed.

I pulled the other chair over, next to his, close enough so that when I sat down, we could hold hands. The truth was, I’d gone out there to get him with a horrible ulterior motive, one that was beneath me.

I was crazy jealous of Devlin and Rohan, and Devlin had indicated there were things I could do with other men, as long as I didn’t let them fuck me, and I wasn’t actually considering doing them with Maguire, but part of me did want to, and—

It was confusing.

I was glad of this distraction, though. This was better. Now, I could take care of Maguire instead of being selfish and vindictive and jealous and whatever else I was.

His hand was warm against mine.

I interlaced our fingers.

He turned our clasped hands over, gazing at the way our fingers looked next to each other. “I’m thinking I should conceal it. I can’t think that revealing it will mean anything other than negative consequences for me. If I tell them, I bet I get fired.”

“You really think so?”

“If they don’t want Prince Devlin’s knot in you,” he said, “they very definitely don’t want mine in you.”

I gasped, tightening my grip on him. “Oh, you have a knot.”

“First knot I’ve ever had,” he said, voice going tight in worry. “It’s very fucking strange. But I can tell you that I want it in you.”

I squirmed, a pleasant warmth going through me. I wanted to ask him to let me see it. I wanted to see a knot very badly.

“Actually, maybe I should tell them. Maybe I should get fired. How do I protect you if I’m the thing that you need protection from?” His eyes widened. “Shit, could I bite you?”

I shivered, the mention of being bitten making me feel too-sensitive and eager.

He noticed. “Are you cold, Eleri?”

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m just… I want you, too.”

He looked stricken. He gaped at me.

“Well, we won’t,” I said, sitting up straighter, lifting my chin. I felt suddenly regal, and I didn’t know where it was coming from. Maybe I was finally coming into my own. I was going to be a princess, after all, and someday, a queen. That was hardly believable. “I mean, Devlin did say that he doesn’t want anyone else to fuck me, and I’m positive he doesn’t want anyone else to knot me. He did say I could… with my mouth, but… we won’t do that either.” My voice had gone extremely breathy.

Maguire’s eyes widened. His jaw worked as he looked at me, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he extricated his fingers from mine.

“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean… I’m being so inappropriate, aren’t I?” Was this what it was to be an omega? Did you simply start having casual conversations about negotiating sex acts with everyone you met?

“You’re fine,” he said. “It’s me who shouldn’t even be in here.” His hands were shaking. “I’m going to text my direct superior right now and come clean about this.”

“But that will mean you get fired,” I said.

“Well, maybe if I’m open about it, I’ll simply get reassigned,” he said.

“I don’t think, once they find out about you, they just let it go. Maybe they don’t hurt you, but… well, the Queen was very concerned about explaining where it was that I came from.”

“Yeah,” he said quietly.
