Then I’d sat up in bed watching my comfort show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and feeling sorry for myself. It was after midnight when I looked at my texts and realized I’d been summoned to this press conference today.
So, then I’d tried to get some sleep. I was bleary-eyed and unshaven as I slid into one of the seats in the rooms with the mirrors.
Someone fetched me some coffee while someone else lathered up my jaw and I did my best not to yawn.
During all this, very faintly, I could smell the omega. She wasn’t in the room with me, but I had a sense of where she was, just from the scent.
And before too long, I found myself getting up and wandering out of the room in between the shave and getting my hair styled. I went straight for the scent.
She was in a room with an army of women, and they were cinching up a dress that she was wearing. It was light green. It hit below the knee, a tea-length dress as they called it. Something I never knew until I was an alpha prince was that certain times of the day called for different lengths in one’s skirt. They were pinning the waist, because it was too big on her, and she turned to look at me as I stood in the doorway, and she was impossibly beautiful.
I just stared at her, a smile playing on my lips. I was surprised how I felt. I thought maybe I’d hate her or something, knowing how Devlin felt about her. I was definitely jealous of her, so it stood to reason that I’d dislike her.
However, she was impossible to dislike.
She smelled good, and she was pretty, and she made me feel settled and soothed, like her presence was rubbing down the hackles on the back of my neck.
“Prince Rohan,” she said.
I came into the room then, my smile widening. “Sorry. I followed your scent.”
A blush rose on her cheeks. “Oh, is it strong? For all the alphas?” She shot a glance down at my crotch.
Boom, there it was. My knot for her. But it only made me smile wider. “Very strong,” I said, and my voice went a little gravelly. I closed the distance between us, and now I was practically on top of her.
She looked up at me, that pretty spill of red on her cheeks, her breath rising and falling, her limbs graceful, her body small and lovely. “I’m so very, very sorry.”
“Don’t be,” I said. “You smell divine.”
“So do you,” she whispered. Then winced and looked away. “Oh, I seem to be saying all the wrong things. I can’t help but get so flustered around… will I be like this around all alphas?”
“I don’t know how you’ll be around alphas, I’m afraid,” I said. I made her flustered? This was fantastic. She was fantastic. I understood exactly why Devlin wanted her all to himself and I was fiercely disappointed I wouldn’t be able to bite and bond her. My alpha wanted her.
I’d gotten knots for omegas before. Omegas were always enticing, of course, and they always smelled good, but she was different. I’d never felt this way around an omega before.
“No,” she said softly. “I met Prince Mark, and it wasn’t at all like this. You… it’s like with Devlin.”
“Is it?” I said, brightening.
“No, it’s…” She shook herself. “Obviously, it’s not. Devlin and I, it’s something special. He thinks it’s a pair bond. I need to be quiet.”
“Don’t silence yourself, omega,” I said, very serious. “And if anyone is trying to silence you, I’m not pleased about that.”
She tilted her head one side. “All right, I won’t silence myself. Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me for that,” I said. I had an urge, deep down, to make it so nothing hurt this woman for the rest of her life. It was like the rush of a flowing river, endlessly fed from a strong source. I was devoted to her, that quickly. How very, very strange, and yet wonderful.
Suddenly, her head tipped up, her nostrils flaring.
Then, I caught the scent, too.
Sinclair.
Of course he’d be here. They’d want us all here.
“Excuse me,” said the woman who was pinning the omega’s dress. “Prince Rohan, we need you to leave the room so that she can get undressed and we can do these alterations on her dress.”
“Oh, of course, sorry,” I said.
