“I see,” said the Queen with a sigh.

Devlin hunched up his shoulders.

“Hey, she can’t help her biology, and we all know how he scents,” said Rohan to Devlin in a low voice. “Don’t blame her.”

“How do I scent?” said Sinclair with a laugh.

Rohan rolled his eyes.

“What do I smell like to you, omega?”

I only shook my head.

“I bet, I smell like freedom, huh?” said Sinclair. “Wide open spaces, the clear blue sky, summer breeze?”

“It’s not a pair bond, is it, Devlin?” said the Queen.

Devlin looked at me, and his lower lip was trembling.

“No,” said the Queen. “None of that. Pull yourself together, for the sake of all that is sacred.”

Devlin’s expression changed and he turned to the Queen.

“Much better,” she said. “Now, there are ways through this. I’ve known of packs where the omega has relationships with alphas who don’t get along with each other. It’s not ideal, but the packs have an agreement, a schedule—”

“You want me to let Sinclair bite her?” said Devlin a dull, blank voice.

“I think Eleri wants it,” said the Queen. “Omegas feel much safer with more than one bite, and I know this from experience. When I was in a bond with only one other alpha, it was a volatile and difficult time for me, and I needed ever so much in the way of extra activities beyond what my mate could give me.”

“But she’s the only one I’ve ever reacted to,” said Devlin. “That must mean something, doesn’t it?”

The Queen shrugged. “Must it?”

Devlin bowed his head.

“Well, it’s not my affair,” said the Queen.

Devlin scoffed.

“No, I will stay out of this. I have never entirely understood what led to this rift between you and my grandson, though I cannot say I blame you, because he is loathsome.”

“Don’t hold back there, Gran,” said Sinclair.

“At any rate, I cannot force anything. Perhaps I’m incorrect. Perhaps a pair bond will be adequate for you and Eleri both. If it isn’t, extra bites can always be added, of course. To be frank, this is the least of our current worries. There will need to be a great deal of repairing work done after the damage done today by you and Sinclair. The stories are going to be about you’re fighting over the omega, and the fist fight is really too much. You gave them everything they wanted. They’re all having a celebratory lap right now. You know better.”

“It’s the omega,” said Sinclair.

“Me?” I said.

“It’s true,” said Devlin. “I think it’s because it’s so volatile. I want her, Your Majesty, but I haven’t been able to have her, and I feel that if I could simply—”

“No,” said the Queen. “No, absolutely not. This has already been decided. And if you think moving up your biting her is a good idea at this point, you are mad. It is definitely not.”
