We both cocked our heads to listen, and then, in wordless agreement, took off together down the sidewalk.

We were just in time to watch Sinclair and Eleri zoom off together on his motorcycle. The jackass could have killed her. If they hadn’t gotten that gate open…

Devlin stared into their wake, hands clenched in fists.

I put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, I’m sure she didn’t mean to—”

“No, she didn’t,” he said, turning back to me. “It’s him. We all know how he makes you do stupid things. I know where he’ll take her.”

“You do?” I said.

“He’s nothing if not predictable,” said Devlin. “Now, how the hell do we get someone to let our car out of this place? Should I have another driver pick us up somewhere in walking distance, maybe?”

I surveyed the bottleneck of cars. “Yeah, sounds like the best idea.”

AT FIRST, WE were being pursued by paparazzi, but Sinclair drove like a madman, weaving in and around cars on the city streets, running traffic lights and stop signs, deftly navigating the motorcycle in ways that the cars couldn’t replicate.

Soon enough, we’d lost them, leaving them behind in the snarls of the traffic of the city.

We drove out of the city limits and up into the mountains.

We took winding roads up higher and higher. I peered over the guardrails down at the gleaming sunlight on the sea below, as we ascended further and further up. The air began to feel thinner, and the temperature dropped a little. I hugged Sinclair tighter as the wind whipped past me.

Finally, he pulled into the parking lot of a little restaurant and pub. It was short and squat. It had a covered porch that wrapped around the front and one side in an L-shape. There were strings of lights hanging down over the porch. The sign read, The Sea Shanty.

We got off the motorcycle, and I felt a little unsteady on my feet.

“That luncheon was dead awful,” he said to me, holding out his hand for the helmet. “I’m famished.”

“I thought the food was good,” I said, unhooking my helmet to hand it to him.

“You can still eat,” he said. “You’ll want to, trust me.”

Something about his voice, it was an invitation to indulgence. I liked it. I grinned at him.

He took me by the hand again and I let him tug me close. He smiled at me, looking deeply into my eyes. “Going to kiss you, omega.”

I let out a shuddering breath and nodded.

His mouth was urgent, and the way the cigarettes mingled with the flavor of him was somehow like caramel, just a hint of burnt sugar. I fisted the front of his shirt, opening my mouth to him, desperation traveling through me like a hot tongue of flame.

He groaned, pulling me closer, molding his body into mine. I felt his erection.

I sighed into his mouth.

He let go of me, letting out a breath. “Shit. I need a cigarette after that kiss.”

I giggled.

He shrugged. “We’ll see if they’ll let us sit outside.”

Hand-in-hand, we walked into the restaurant.

There was a sign that said for us to wait to be seated next to a podium which was empty. Sinclair wandered behind the podium, helped himself to two menus and handed one to me. He tucked the other under his arm and went up on tiptoe, scouring the tables he could see through the windows out on the wraparound porch.

The hostess appeared. “I’ll be with you in one moment.”
