I kissed her again.

She clung to me.

There weren’t any more words, but there was something about the way I moved inside her, about our bodies joined, that did the talking for us in some way.

Things weren’t resolved, but they were better.

I WAS STILL in the room with the Queen when Devlin and Eleri appeared later, because the Queen had asked me to stay. She’d even let me sit down on a chair instead of standing at attention, and she was offering me refreshments, but I knew better than to actually take them.

I was beginning to think the scones and sweets the Queen offered to people weren’t even real. Maybe someone shellacked things to look like regular sweets.

Devlin was surprised to see me, but he gave me a smile.

The Queen motioned for them to sit down and offered them some of the scones, which they politely declined.

She sat down. “Well,” she said, “you could have told me that Maguire was an alpha.”

Devlin eyed me.

“She scented it,” I said with a shrug. “I figured there was no point in denying it. I told her it’s been helpful in keeping you from biting Eleri. I have the capacity to resist you in some ways.” And not others, which was honestly confusing to me. I didn’t understand all the ins and outs of being an alpha, what my strengths and my weaknesses were.

“It explains why I’ve always liked him so much,” said the Queen. “Why I’ve trusted him. Omegas can sense it with an alpha, even if there’s no real draw between them. And you’re right, it is useful. I’ve asked him to be available as a bodyguard during events from now on. We don’t want a repeat of yesterday, losing your omega.”

Devlin grimaced. “So, you do know about that.”

“I’m glad no one was hurt,” said the Queen. She turned to Eleri. “You and my grandson, are you frightened of him?”

Eleri’s eyes widened. “W-well… I don’t think he’ll hurt me.”

“Ah, I see,” said the Queen. “It’s that way. He’s attractive to you precisely because of how dangerous he is.” She sighed heavily. “That’s not good. I’ve been through those sorts of infatuations before. They’ve always ended badly in my experience.” She sat back into the couch, tapping her chin, thoughtful. She gave Eleri a shrug. “There’s a school of thought that alphas like that want an omega, and it settles them right down. There’s another school of thought claiming that a stronger alpha can keep a twitchy one reigned in. And there’s a third school of thought that says those sorts of alphas are rabid dogs that should be put down.”

Eleri flinched.

“Well, he’s my grandson,” said the Queen. “So, I don’t hold with that. Do you want to bond with him?”

Eleri glanced at me and then at Devlin.

“Be honest, child,” said the Queen.

“I do,” said Eleri. “Or at least, part of me does. The omega part of me, the instinctive and emotional part of me. But if you asked me if I thought it was a good idea, or if it was smart or safe…” She shrugged. “Well, I can’t say that I do.”

“And you, you’re not pleased, I suppose with the idea of sharing her,” said the Queen.

“No, I’ve come around on that,” said Devlin. “With Maguire and Rohan, anyway.”

“Oh, I see.” The Queen looked at me. “So, this bodyguard has been busy, then.”

Devlin laughed. “I haven’t bitten her, Your Majesty. He’s made sure of that. But if you think that I could have stood not being with her for all this time, you’re out of your mind.”

The Queen sighed heavily. “A pack is the best idea for everyone. If only there was one of the alphas who could keep Sinclair well in hand.”

“Maybe Rohan,” I said.

“Really?” The Queen brightened. “Well, I shall look into that.” She clasped her hands together and then changed the subject altogether. “All right, I’ve called you in because I’ve gotten everything together for Eleri’s ball.”

“Wait,” said Devlin. “Is there something you want to say to us about Eleri’s dress and all of that?”
