“No, but I am yours.”

“God, Colby, you’re giving me a headache. Can we just agree to disagree? If we can’t, I’ll have Caye come up.”

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “Sick bastard that I am, I will take what I can get. But know this. There will never be another for me. Never.”

“You’ll need heirs…”

“No. I plan to ask Scott to take over if I go down.”

“But the League is after them.”

Colby laughed. “The League has got much bigger problems on their hands. Scott and Kyra have fallen to the bottom of their who-to-kill list.”

“You miss her.” There was no question as to who the ‘her’ was, nor that Colby missed his sister.

“Yes.”

“Tell her. Hasn’t she figured out that this whole ‘I’m a notorious gangster’ thing was all a ruse to hide the network you’ve been building?”

“I think she’s beginning to. She and Scott went deep underground. They wanted to ensure they’d thrown the League off their scent.”

They rounded the corner to find Asher Wells and Jax Miller waiting for them with Hamish.

Brie grinned at him. “I think the jig is up.”

“I’ve been trying to avoid this.”

“In the same way I knew you had a right to be angry with me, they have a right to be furious with you.”

“They could have had a little more faith in me…”

“Why? You did everything you could to ensure no one knew what you were up to.”

“True, but you didn’t buy it.”

“No, but then…” she stopped short.

Colby’s grin was infectious and damn sexy. “But then, they were never my fated mate.”

“I was going to say but they never fucked you.” They walked up the steps. “Gentlemen.”

“We need to talk,” growled Jax.

CHAPTER 7

COLBY

“Isuppose it’s long overdue.” He reached for Brie, but she had disappeared between his two oldest friends and into the house. “Let’s go into my study.”

He didn’t wait for their response but led them down to his office. He had kept them at arms’ length for so many years, but it was the best way he had known to keep them safe. There had been work he needed to do. He’d seen the rise of the Shadow League—had watched while they and the Ruling Council used the Shadow Sisters as an excuse to tighten their grip on the shifter community. Taking on Thane and restoring stability and wealth to Windsong had set his plans back, but in the end, having both the ability to command his people and an inordinate amount of money had helped.

He walked behind his desk, sat down, and invited them to sit as well. “I suppose we were always destined for this moment.”

“What the fuck, Reynolds?” growled Jax. Being a Kodiak bear-shifter, growling came easily to Jax.

“I second what Jax said, but I’d like to add once the secret was out, you didn’t think you should come to us?” asked Asher.

“And do what? Beg for your forgiveness? Make excuses for the things I’ve lied about? Because let me be clear, all the illegal things you think I’ve done, I have.”
