Scott chuckled; merriment danced in his eyes. “But they’d accept Kyra as beta and the Resistance would welcome her as a member of the leadership group.”
Kyra snatched her hands away. “You knew,” she accused Scott.
“Nay, my love,” he said, letting the thick Scottish brogue creep through. “But you said you thought he was up to something. He would never risk exposing you to danger if he wasn’t pretty damn sure you could be safe. And what he says makes sense.”
“But I only just got him back…”
“It will be different,” said Colby. “We can talk on the phone and do video calls. The League now knows I’ve been the one jerking their strings. They’re not happy with me. I spoke earlier this morning to the team I have already assembled at St. Piran’s Abbey. When we’ve put the League down, we can visit back and forth. It won’t be like it was. I promise.”
“Promise me Brie will be with you…”
“That’s my plan. Even once the League and the Ruling Council are neutralized, the Shadow Sisters will need to continue their work. There has long been a need for a group of dedicated individuals that could help women—shifter and human alike. St. Piran’s would be perfect for that, or at least I intend to make it so. Besides, Cornwall has long been known as a smuggler’s safe haven, so I can keep my hand in.”
Scott laughed.
“Do not encourage him,” Kyra groaned. Kyra threw herself at her much-loved older brother. “You swear you won’t freeze me out.”
“Scout’s honor,” Colby said, crossing his heart.
“You were never a scout,” snorted Kyra.
He took her hands in his and kissed her fingers. “Then brother’s honor. I missed you, too, and I will never let anything come between us again.”
“You’d better not.”
“I won’t; I swear.” He paused. “I need to get my people on the move. The trawlers are ready to go. If I know Brie, she’s already got everyone else on board. My mate believes in punctuality.”
“That was her, wasn’t it?” asked Kyra with a frown.
“Her? When? The answer depends on what and why you’re asking?”
“The girl giving you the blow job when Autumn and I burst in on you.”
Colby threw back his head and laughed loudly. “Oh my god! The look on your face when the two of you burst into my private study—and I stress the word private. It was priceless.”
“You’d better hope Brie doesn’t see that as cheating,” said Scott.
“How could she? It was Brie doing the honors, or at least pretending to. We heard Kyra and Autumn coming down the hall and we weren’t ready for anyone to know the extent of my involvement with the Shadow Sisters.”
“No, wait. That doesn’t track,” said Kyra. “The girl had black hair.”
“Over the years, Brie has had many different colors of hair, but I can assure you that the only woman who has had my cock in her mouth for many years is Brie.”
Kyra rolled her eyes. “I really don’t understand either of you. But that’s beside the point. Scott and I just got here. I don’t like that you’re already leaving.”
“You always had me, Kyra; you just didn’t know it. I won’t be far, just a video chat away. Besides, you're going to be far too busy bossing them all around. Trust those in the leadership group—Deke and Hayden especially. When the time comes, we’re going to need Hayden to kill Strode or at least be there.”
“Why?” asked Scott.
“Because as a hellhound he can banish Strode’s remains to a place from which he can never return…although I wonder about that.”
“About what?” asked Kyra.
“Adriana is a witch descended from the banshees. I just wonder what the banshees might be able to do.” Colby shook his head. “Musings for another day.” He hugged Kyra tight. “Take care of him, Windsong, and the Resistance. I’m leaving it in your capable hands, sister mine. Never forget, Winter is only a phone call away as well, and until Hamish leaves with Trudy, he can help, too.”
“Take care of Brie. She does love you,” said Kyra. “She doesn’t want to, but she does.”
Scott wrapped his arm around Kyra’s waist, drawing her close. “Sometimes the most reluctant mates make the best ones.”
