He watched until he was certain Uziel wasn’t coming back, and then he turned to find Lily. She cowered on the ground, covered in mud. She must have fallen in an attempt to run off when the bears started fighting.

He padded over to her, ignoring the fear that caused her eyes to widen. If it was the last thing he did, he’d make sure she never looked at him that way again.

SEVEN

LILLIAN

Nothing could have prepared Lillian for the sound of two bears fighting. The sight of them snarling and snapping at each other terrified her even more than Uziel had.

The bears were huge. Whether all bears were this large or the size was attributed to the animals being shifters, Lillian couldn’t be sure. She did know she was frightened beyond belief.

In an attempt to escape the fight and Uziel’s attack, she turned on her heel and ran. The heels she wore were made for show, not for running. They kept sinking into the grass and, finally, the mud.

The sludge clung onto her shoe and caused her to fall onto all fours. With an audible curse, she turned to watch the bears continue their assault on one another. Crawling from the mud pit, she pulled herself to her feet and turned once more to see the bigger of the two animals backing away.

The smaller bear pushed himself off his back and ran into the woods. Wide-eyed, Lillian watched the massive creature make its way toward her. Too scared to run even if help was within inches of her, she stood rooted to the spot.

The bear walked slowly to her, and when they were a hair’s breadth apart, he nudged her palm.

This is another shifter, she thought. The one that saved me.

Slowly, she raised a hand and placed it gently on the animal’s massive head. The bear began shaking violently. With a gasp, she jerked her hand back and watched as the bear shifted into a human.

Oliver stood in front of her.

“Oliver?”

“It’s all right, Lily. I’m here.”

Without thinking, she threw herself against him, not caring at all that she was covered in mud or that he was completely naked. For her, there was nothing better than to have him beside her once more.

Before she could help herself, she burst into tears, her head buried in his shoulder. The fear and panic she had felt when Uziel had her on the ground came rushing back.

Oliver tightened his grip around her.

“Easy, Lily. Tell me what happened.”

Between sobs, Lily began talking. “I didn’t know Uziel was a shifter.”

Oliver raised a brow in surprise. “You know him?”

She nodded against his shoulder, and he pulled back to look at her tear-stained face. His thumb came up to brush her cheek.

“Yes. He’s an art collector. I’ve known him for a while now. He’s always given me the creeps, but tonight … he … he attacked me.”

Oliver visibly stiffened. “What do you mean he attacked you?”

Lily sniffed and wiped her eyes with the palm of her hand. “He said he’s had his eye on me for a while, and he’s done waiting. He said …” She burst into tears again before she could finish.

Oliver pulled her against his warm body once again to comfort her. His massive hands rubbed her back gently as he tried to comfort her.

“What did he say, Lily?”

Between giant gulps, she managed to get out the next few words. “That no one could make me come the way he could.”

“He what?” Oliver roared.

His anger was so prominent that Lily pulled back, terrified all over again. He immediately calmed down, seeing that his reaction frightened her.
