Uziel was in front, leading the attack.

NINETEEN

OLIVER

Oliver stood in his office, the phone pressed firmly against his ear as he furiously dialed another number. So far, he had six teams put together, but he wanted more. He would need every able-bodied shifter to fight this war with him.

He wouldn’t be able to do it on his own. He couldn’t allow his mate to flounder alone when he had everything at his disposal.

He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was beyond capable of taking down Uziel in a fair fight. However, what worried him was the certainty that the other shifter wouldn’t fight fair.

After all, Uziel had not only attacked Lillian the night of the masquerade, but he had also burned down the gallery and Lillian’s apartment building. It was clear to Oliver the other shifter wasn’t playing with a full deck. Anyone who would do that was certainly unhinged.

If he chose to use Lillian against him, Oliver would have no choice but to back down. That thought made his heart pound horribly in his chest. He needed to find Uziel and fast.

Oliver finished dialing the number, and Magnus answered on the first ring. He was the alpha of a panther pride not too far away. Oliver would use all his resources to win this war.

After a quick but incredibly thorough overview of what was going on, Magnus assured him he would head in his direction immediately. And to save time, he promised to call Callum, the wolf alpha, and Adrian, leader of a dragon clan, on his way.

“Don’t worry, Oliver. We’ll be there in time to save your woman.”

“See you soon, Magnus. Thank you.”

Oliver prayed that Magnus, Callum, and Adrian would make it on time. It was imperative that everyone was there. Although, he didn’t think the alphas would be there before the fighting began.

He had a feeling he was facing a fight sooner rather than later. For Uziel to burn the gallery and Lillian’s apartment building, he was declaring war. He wanted to fight, and he wanted it now.

He placed the receiver down and then immediately picked it up. He knew that the cougars were already on their way. They wanted justice for Berline. That was one phone call he wouldn’t have to make.

The phone rang a couple of times before a breathless Quintin answered. “We’ve got the majority of the town shifted and ready. We’re just waiting on your order.”

“Thanks, Quintin. Where are you? I’ll meet you now.”

“We’re outside of town. Clinton Road.”

“All right. I’m on my way.”

Clinton Road was a seven-mile stretch of country lane that led from one end of town to the other. Its open fields and clean pastures made an excellent area for the bear sleuths to shift, run, and play. Especially the children.

The best part about Clinton Road was that it was only about ten minutes from his office. Oliver got into his car and drove like a wild man. His nerves were raw, and fear clutched at his chest.

If only they had a semblance of an idea as to Uziel’s whereabouts. He had to be close. He wouldn’t have made such a bold move against Lillian if he didn’t think he had a shot against Oliver.

As it was, all alphas made enemies at some point in their lives. Adversaries were hard to avoid when it was up to a single person to make every tough decision. Eventually, someone was bound to get angry.

Oliver had no doubt that Uziel was massing an army of his own. That didn’t worry him nearly as much as what he had planned for Lillian. He had a team already on their way to his house to keep an extra set of watchful eyes on his woman and Ronnetta.

Knowing that the team would be there any minute gave him some peace of mind. Fifty of his strongest fighters outside his doors would no doubt be able to hold off any attack until he and the rest of his teams got there.

He turned onto Clinton Road, and the sight before him warmed his heart. The cougar and bear shifters were in their animal form, waiting for him. There were hundreds of them, and that alone ensured him that no matter what Uziel had planned, he stood no chance of winning.

He saw Quintin in front, and he rolled his window down as he pulled up to talk to his second-in-command.

“We’re ready to march, Captain,” Quintin said with a glint of maliciousness in his eyes. “Or, in our case, run. I think …”

He was cut short by the sound of Oliver’s phone ringing. While he didn’t recognize the number, he answered it anyway, knowing that Magnus had reached out to many allies in the short time since they last spoke.

“Hello?”
