“He wants to keep playing robot destroys the city,” I interpret.

Breanna nods congenially, but I shake my head. “Jaxon, Miss Breanna is going to have plenty of time to play with you on Monday. We need to show her the house first.”

There is a distinct brightness about Breanna as soon as I announce she has the job, but I don’t give her the chance to rejoice.

“I pay a lot because I expect a lot,” I say, rising. I twist the neck of the marshmallow bag and find the tie that was holding it together on the floor of the pantry.

Breanna and Jaxon trail after me, Jaxon still trying to talk around his marshmallows.

I take over the guided tour since no one can understand what Jaxon is saying anyway. “I expect you to make him something for lunch. Not every day, but he shouldn’t eat mac n’ cheese or chicken nuggets every day either. Clean up after yourselves. If I leave the house this way, I want it to look this way when I come home.”

I feel Breanna sizing up the pantry, her eyes darting up the well-stocked shelves. There are a lot more details she needs to know, things that I haven’t even thought about Lisa completing until she was gone.

“Jaxon, let’s show her your room.”

We go up the stairs in the kitchen, and Jaxon bounds over to the door directly by the stairs. “This is mine!” he shouts, a tiny chunk of marshmallow flying out of his mouth.

Why is my kid so disgusting at times?

Jaxon shows her the bathroom, pointing out the shower where he “showers like a big boy” and the sink where he “washes his hands so he doesn’t get sick.”

A long hallway runs across the middle of the house. It has rails on one side of the balcony that looks out over the front hall.

I point to the doorway at the end of the hallway. It leads to the master suite. “That is my room, and there is no reason for you or Jaxon to ever go in there.”

Jaxon shakes his head at Breanna so that she really gets the point. “This one’s my playroom!” He cheers, charging into a room that has every toy a child could ever want. It is also spotless, but Jaxon quickly throws open the closet doors and displays his perfectly organized space.

“Like I said. Cleanliness is important. If you play with something, then put it back when you’re done.”

“Well, I don’t plan on playing with any of these toys. It will be Jaxon doing that,” Breanna says.

Jaxon wraps his arms around her legs, any sense of shyness long since gone. “I like you. Can you be my new friend?”

“Yes, I’ll be your new friend.”

“Miss Breanna needs to go home now.”

Jaxon grabs Breanna’s hand.

I follow them down the stairs. “You may have noticed, but I have a few cameras in the common places. Does that bother you?”

“I noticed one in the kitchen,” Breanna says. “I don’t care as long as that’s the only place they are.”

She gives me a long look like she doesn’t trust me not to place one in the bathroom.

I stop Breanna before she can get to the front door and grab something off the printer in my office. I hand it to her. “The contract. Take your time reading it and bring it signed on Monday.”

Breanna accepts the contract, and it’s the closest I’ve been to her since she stepped into my house. I catch a whiff of some sort of perfume, and I wonder if she put that on to get my attention.

But then I remember that she didn’t know she was coming to interview with me. At least, that’s what she says.

“See you Monday!” Breanna says. Jaxon bounces alongside Breanna to the front door, then turns to me as soon as it’s shut, demanding that we play superheroes. I watch Breanna walk to her car and get inside. She starts shuffling through the contract right away.

Then, it’s like she feels my gaze. She looks up at me, but I don’t know if she can see me clearly through the darkened front windows. I turn back to put on a show for Jaxon so I can think for a little while. This was unexpected.
