As we sit in silence, the weight of the situation hangs heavy between us. But there's also a newfound sense of solidarity, a shared determination to face whatever challenges lie ahead together.

In that moment, I realize that Breanna isn't just my employee. She's become a trusted friend, someone I care deeply about. And I'll do whatever it takes to help her through this difficult time.

I wonder how long it’s been since she’s had someone she can rely on.

In the end, it's not just about saving Breanna's home. It's about standing by her side through thick and thin, offering support and compassion when she needs it most.

“I really do need to get to work,” I tell Breanna.

She nods and brushes at her cheeks one last time, wiping away a stray tear.

Then, she heads inside and settles on the carpet next to Jaxon. I grab my lunch from the fridge and hurry to my car, my mind already churning with ideas.

Valuing her house from the outside, I would think there’s no way it sold for more than $300,000. Who knows how much was put as a down payment or how much has been paid since then?

I’m itching to get my hands on the information, but it’s not until twenty minutes later that Breanna sends me her login information.

Even though I’m already late to work, my patients can wait. I sit in the parking lot and pull up the website, punching in Breanna’s login credentials.

My mouth hangs open as I gape at the amount. I was right on the evaluation of the house, but it’s as though her parents never paid a single mortgage payment. Or maybe they would pay one month, then skip the next. Penalties have accrued, and the amount owed now is almost the same as the amount owed when the house was bought twelve years ago.

My lips set in grim determination, I call my financial adviser and let him know what I want to do. He starts to advise me against it, but I let him know that I’m not asking for advice. I’m asking him to do me a favor.

Then, I hang up and head into work, trusting him to do what I pay him to do.

Chapter twenty-five

Breanna

The day feels incredibly long.

Harrison hasn’t responded to the text I sent earlier with my login credentials. I wonder if he even looked at it or if he got so caught up with work that he didn’t have time to check on my account.

My heart pounds in my chest. I couldn’t blame him. Sure, Jaxon loves me, but I am just the nanny.

He’s already done so much for me, and the salary he pays is more than generous, especially considering I’ve spent most of today inside my own head.

“Can we go to the park?” Jaxon asks.

I agree, only because I know it will make the time pass faster.

I hear nothing from Harrison all day. A couple of times, I almost text him.

But I don’t. As the day ends, I wonder if the bank will call me again tomorrow. Will they let me know I only have twenty-four hours left in my house and that I should start packing my bags?

When Harrison arrives home from work, he’s carrying a brown paper bag that smells like french fries.

Apparently, Jaxon is the hound dog in residence because he lifts his nose into the air. “French fries?” he exclaims excitedly. “Daddy, did you get me a hamburger with cheese and no pickles and ketchup?”

“Yes, I got you a hamburger just like you like it.”

My stomach growls. I was just about to fix Jaxon some dinner, and myself as well. Eating over here has saved a lot of money on groceries. But now that Harrison is home, it’s clearly time for me to leave… without dinner.

“I got you something too,” Harrison says, motioning to the bag. He turns to Jaxon. “Jaxon, you can watch one show while you’re eating. I need to talk to Miss Breanna for a minute.”

“A show is longer than one minute. It’s twenty-two minutes.”

Harrison and I both smile at Jaxon’s exactness.
