“Because if you say it out loud, then it won’t come true.”

Jaxon whips around and searches out the shooting star again, if that’s what it is and it’s not some sort of aircraft. I squint at it, but I’m not willing to take the magic out of the moment by telling Jaxon the truth.

“I wish!” Jaxon shouts, like the louder his voice is the more likely the star will hear his wish. “That we won’t be together forever!” he shouts the words loudly, and a proud smile fills his face as he opens his eyes.

“There, I think the star only heard that wish. And since I said it out loud, it won’t come true.”

Harrison reaches out, taking my hand in his, his touch sending a jolt of warmth through me. We both laugh at Jaxon’s logic.

“I made a different wish. A quiet one,” Jaxon assures us. Then, he hunches over and mutters something we can’t catch.

When he straightens, he is full of childish excitement. “So, I can’t tell you my wish, but it’s a good one. So, it’s going to come true. I kept it a secret.”

I smile, feeling my heart swell with love for these two incredible people who have become my everything. "Well, I won’t tell anyone my wish,” I say, squeezing Harrison’s hand, “but it might have something to do with chocolate chip cookies.”

Jaxon’s eyes widen, and he looks at the plastic container that holds the rest of the cookies. “Did you…”

He runs over and peels up the lid, sighing in relief when he sees there are still at least a dozen cookies left.

Then, he runs back off to the swingset, talking about swinging at night.

As the last of the orangish light fades away, we sit together in peaceful silence, basking in the glow of the love that surrounds us. In this moment, I know that no matter what challenges may come our way, as long as we have each other, we can overcome anything.

And as the stars begin to twinkle overhead, I make a silent wish of my own, sending it out into the universe with all the love in my heart. A wish for a future filled with happiness, laughter, and endless moments like this one, spent together with the two people who mean everything to me.

As I look up at the night sky, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the journey that has brought us here, to this moment, to this place of love and togetherness.

As the night deepens, we gather our belongings and head back inside the house. Jaxon yawns, rubbing his eyes sleepily, and I scoop him up into my arms, carrying him to his bedroom.

Harrison follows close behind, his hand brushing against mine as we walk down the hallway. In Jaxon's room, I tuck him into bed, pulling the covers up to his chin and pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead.

"Goodnight, my little star," I whisper, smoothing his hair back from his face.

"Goodnight, Mommy," Jaxon murmurs, already drifting off to sleep.

I smile, my heart swelling with warmth at the sound of that word. It's a word I never thought I'd hear directed at me, but now it's become the sweetest sound in the world.

Harrison lingers in the doorway, watching us with a soft expression on his face. "He loves you," he says quietly, his voice filled with tenderness.

"I love him too," I reply, feeling a rush of emotion overwhelm me. "And I love you, Harrison."

He crosses the room in two quick strides, wrapping me in a warm embrace. "I love you too, Breanna," he murmurs, his lips brushing against mine in a gentle kiss.

In that moment, everything feels perfect, like the pieces of a puzzle finally clicking into place. We may have faced challenges along the way, but together, we've built something beautiful—a family forged not by blood, but by love and commitment.

As we stand there, holding each other close, I know that no matter what the future may hold, as long as we have each other, we can weather any storm. And as I drift off to sleep in Harrison's arms, I feel a sense of peace wash over me, knowing that I am exactly where I'm meant to be.
